Bridge to Brooklyn('s heart)

Backstory

His family wasn't great, he was an only child with a verbally abusive dad and physically abusive mom (he got scars) and the parents died in a car crash (with race in the car (have fun with nightmares and panic attacks with that future me)) and Race gets sent to the Refuge and stay there for a year and a half. The last few months are when Jack shows up (jack is about ten so two/three years older) and they get a brotherly bond. After Jack escapes the first time he comes back and rescues Race. Soon they both become newsies in Manhattan. This is when Race is seven almost eight

When Snyder gets Jack again and escapes from Roseavelt's carriage Race is worrying and patches him up

Spoiler!:: Race lived in Brooklyn before the crash and the former (before Spot) king of Brooklyn was his cousin's friend so they knew each other and that's how he was able to continue selling at Sheepshead (he was already selling there, a lot of the Manhattan newsies freaked when they heard) because he may live in 'Hatten but he was just as Brooklyn as the rest of 'hem.

When the story starts Race is about eighteen so he's been a newsie for over ten years

The former king of Brooklyn met him when he had a meeting with the former king of Manhattan and sees Race and recognizes him but mostly his voice. They make a deal that since he grew up in Brooklyn he can continue selling there (and he was really good at it, plus earning a little extra money from *look under the name)

Spot is super surprised when he finds out

He also loves Race using his Italian accent or speaking Italian

Spot's heart also completely breaks when he sees Race's scars (by this time he's calling him Racer)

Race got his name partially from selling at the Sheepshead races, partially cause he's really fast, and when there's a boring headline he adversities the odds for betting on the races. He's also really good at betting on the races since he had been selling there for so long so he picked up on how to win.

Spot's name comes from he was very adventurous and when he was younger he changed where he was selling at random times so you never knew what "spot" he'd be at
