"Sorry, I couldn't show you the town, but I figured this would be safer," Tamlin said walking through the field of berries and Citrus trees.
"No, it's ok, this is," He smiled as he heard her take a deep breath, "this is beautiful."
You're beautiful, was what He wanted to say but instead He started telling her a bunch of random farming facts.
Mother, why was he so awkward?
Tamlin never usually talked to girls. Between training and schooling and his other duties, He hadn't had much time for relationships or just friendships in general.
He never really had a friend.
"You like farming?" She asked, smiling as if she knew how bad He was at this.
He laughed, Tamlin always laughed when He was nervous. His family was not a big fan of that trait. They thought he didn't take anything seriously, or that He was always laughing at them.
"No, but my father says it's important to know all the workings of spring court if I am to help my brothers rule one day."
"Help rule?" She asked and He plucked a strawberry and ate it.
"Well, my father has assumed that my oldest brother Basil would be high lord," He didn't want to give her more information because she was from an enemy court.
"What information do you not want to give me?" She questioned and Tamlin shuddered.
Mind reading, right.
"Stop looking inside my head," Tamlin felt violated.
Did she hear any of his other thoughts?
"Yes, actually I did hear your other thoughts. Thank you for calling me beautiful by the way. I didn't think an arrogant male of spring could appreciate a female like me."
His jaw dropped and He could feel his face burning.
"As for you being awkward, I think you're quite good at talking, though I do believe it's sad you don't have any friends—-
"Ok, ok, I get it you can read minds," He tried putting up a shield and she just laughed.
"Normal shields don't work if you want to keep me out, you need a mind shield," she said tapping her temple.
"How," He nervously cleared his throat, "how does one create a mind shield?"
She thought for a moment, biting her lip, Tamlin registered the movement.
"I'm not sure I can tell you that. Nothing personal— actually, definitely personal, cause you from an enemy court and all..." she trailed off and he nodded still infuriated she could see his thoughts.
What if He thought of something weird like—-
No, she can read his thoughts.
"Like what," she asked smiling and he just glared at her.
"I guess high fae from night court aren't scary, just major assholes."
He basically yelled that in his mind earning a punch in the side from her.
He could see the sun start to peak over the horizon, and it seems she saw too.
"I should go," she said, taking a step away from him and spreading those marvelous wings.
She smirked, "marvelous huh?"
Tamlin rolled his eyes and asked, "will you be at the equinox ball in autumn this year?"
He had seen her about five years ago at the ball but only from afar. He was told not to get close to anyone from night court.
She nodded, "will you?" She asked and he smiled.
"So, you want to see me again," his smile turned into a full on grin.
She scoffed and crossed her arms, "whatever," and shot into the night sky.
Tamlin spent the rest of the night crafting wings of his own matching hers. He try to flap them but a slice of pain went through his back. These things are really heavy. He quickly shifted back and winnowed home before his father could catch him.
That night tamlin slept more easily, listening to the distant murmurs of a beating heart.
