The Next Day

Sam's Point of View

I woke up well rested, I'm not used to sleeping alone and not being woken up in the middle of the night by a screaming child. I started thinking more about what was going on between Karlie and Shelby. I wonder how Shelby is holding up sleeping in the same bed as her crush. I'm sure living with her is hard enough, but being so close in an intimate place like a bed has got to be a whole other level of difficult.

I stumbled out of bed and went to the living room / kitchen area to see if any one was up. Karlie was wide awake brewing a fresh pot of coffee. I could see why Shelby was attracted to her, not only was she beautiful, but she was so confident. Shelby always seemed to go for confident women, sometimes so overly confident they were a bit cocky. Which was ironic considering Shelby is typically more reserved. I guess opposites attract. I had met Charlie once and got a weird feeling that she was a bit of a player and didn't take the relationship as seriously as Shelby did. I'll have to do some more digging to see if Karlie is the real deal or not.

"Good Morning Karlie, you a big coffee drinker like Shelby?" I asked.

"Actually no, I prefer tea, but I drink it if its around. Don't tell Shelby but I actually bought the coffee maker for her. I noticed Shelby would leave extra early to wait in the line at Starbucks for coffee on her way to work, so I bought this so she could have coffee at home too. I even bought the Starbucks brand coffee grounds. She doesn't know that I got it specifically for her, so I drink it too so she doesn't catch on." Karlie explained.

"Why do you not want Shelby to know the coffee maker was for her?" I asked, confused why she would hide such a nice gesture.

"I got it for her pretty soon after she moved in. I could tell she was upset about the breakup and just wanted to get her something without knowing it's intention was to cheer her up. I didn't know if she would feel embarrassed about me getting her something to cheer her up when we were still getting to know each other." Karlie responded. "I know it sounds strange, but I personally don't like when people acknowledge I'm upset when I barely know them."

"I guess that makes sense. Why didn't you tell her once you guys got closer?" I asked.

"I don't know. I guess I just don't show my feelings in normal ways. Just felt weird to bring up." She admitted.

"Your feelings?" I asked intrigued.

"Yeah, I really care about her. As a friend. I can be very protective of people I care about, but I don't like to show it because I feel like it shows my vulnerability." Karlie responded.

"You are opening up quite a bit to me." I stated.

"Yeah, well I don't really know you. But you seem trustworthy. and if for some reason I make a fool of myself in front of you, it's not like I see you everyday." Karlie explained.

"Hm, good point." I said as Shelby walked out of their room.

"Oh you made coffee, thank god!" Shelby said with a big smile on her face. "What have you guys been talking about?"

"Just how unbearable you are to be around." Karlie said with a wink.

I'm pretty sure Karlie just flirted with Shelby, but by the looks of it Shelby has no idea. Typical Shelby. Always in her head and blind to the clues right in front of her.

We all sat around and talked for a bit more while we drank coffee and ate some bagels that Karlie picked up for us the day before. After we were done eating Karlie excused herself and left for the day. I guess she had some work to catch up on this weekend at the office. As soon as Karlie left, I told Shelby what we were actually talking about and about how Karlie bought the coffee maker specifically for her. I also mentioned that Karlie was flirting with her in front of me this morning and it was super obvious.

"I'm not surprised about the coffee maker, I always thought it was weird that I never saw her drink coffee and then next thing I know we had a new coffee maker and she barely drank any of it." Shelby said. "I'm not so sure about the flirting thing though. I think her personality is just a bit flirty."

"I think you are just overthinking this and doubting yourself like you always do." I told Shelby. "You need to tell her you are actually gay at some point, and who knows, that could lead to her admitting she likes you."

"I do feel more confident in telling her after I saw her reaction to you. I'll tell her soon." Shelby promised.

The rest of the weekend passed by quickly. We spent most of it sight seeing, I had never been to Denver before so it was partially a vacation for me as well. Before I knew it, it was Monday morning and time for me to fly home. I really do hope everything goes well between Karlie and Shelby. Shelby deserves someone amazing.
