3 Days Later
Shelby's Point of View
We spent the next few days at Karlie's parents house. Every morning we would wake up and make breakfast for her mom, then her and her mom would go visit Karlie's dad until lunch time. They would come home and eat, and spend a little time doing things for themselves, then they would go back over from 3 - 6 PM, and come back for dinner. Because he was in the ICU and I am not family, I was not allowed to visit. So I stayed at the house and did some chores for Karen to help make things a bit easier on her. She was resistant at first, but Karlie convinced her to let me help so she could focus on Richard, her husband and Karlie's father.
At night Karlie and I would do different activities with her mom to give her mind a break and distract her from everything going on. We played board games one night, did a puzzle another night, and tonight we were going to watch a movie. We sat on the love seat, while her mom took the recliner. Karlie got us a blanket to share and laid her head on my shoulder while we watched the movie. I noticed her mom look at us a few times, but I figured this was nothing out of the ordinary. Girls that are really close do this sometimes, right? Sam used to put her feet on my lap when we would watch movies together in high school.
After the movie I went back to Karlie's bedroom and got ready for bed. Karlie and her mom hung back and were talking a bit. I gave them their space because I figured it would be good for them to have some alone time outside of the hospital.
A few minutes later
Karlie's Point of View
"I really like Shelby, she's a nice young lady." Mom said.
"Yeah, she's been the best roommate ever, even better than Elliot. But don't tell him I said that," I replied.
"Yeah... roommates, is that what you kids call it now a days?" Mom said slyly
"What are you talking about?" I asked confused.
"Honey, you don't need to hide it anymore, dad and I know." She admitted.
"Know what? I am seriously confused here." I stated.
"That you are gay, and Shelby is obviously your girlfriend. It all makes since, why you never had any steady boyfriends." She explained. "We love you no matter what honey, I am just glad you found a good one, she's a keeper."
"Mom, I'm not gay and Shelby is not my girlfriend. She is my roommate and one of my best friends, but not my girlfriend." I explained.
"You had your head on her shoulder, I noticed you guys cuddling the other day when I walked by your room. And I see the way that girl looks at you." She responded like she was sure she was right.
"I mean we are close, and I have been extra upset so having her here has been nice, but in a friend way. Do you like hugs from your friends when you are upset? And as far as how she looks at me I have no idea what you are talking about." I rambled. "The reason she was looking for a roommate was because her and her serious BOYFRIEND broke up."
"Well maybe she's bi. I know what I saw honey. That's all I am saying." Mom said smiling.
I changed the subject and we talked about how work was going for me and what mom and dad have been up to. After about 30 minutes, I headed to bed. Shelby was fast asleep so I snuck in quietly. We had been laying in each other's arms almost every night, but now I felt self-conscience about it. I didn't want Shelby to get weirded out by me. So I kept my distance tonight and the rest of the trip.
