Hiroki despised following Hideyo to the mall. She was easily distracted and frequently forgot what she was shopping for.
She had rushed Mitsuya out of the house this morning after Hiroki had asked what she had gotten him for their anniversary.
Hiroki realized then that Hideyo was the one who had forgotten her anniversary this time.
Hiroki swore that every time he blinked, he'd end up in a new store, where Hideyo would leave empty-handed and with a sad expression on her face, until she spotted a jewelry store. Hideyo had chosen a silver chain and a large silver cross pendant to complement it.
As he watched Hideyo happily pay for the gift, a small smile formed on his lips.
"What made you choose that?" Hiroki asked, a spoonful of sherbert ice cream in his mouth. Hideyo swung the small white bag in her hand back and forth as she walked through the mall.
"Tsu bought me this necklace for our anniversary last year, so I thought we could match. But in our own style."
Hiroki raised a curious brow at Hideyo, who was now clutching the gold necklace she was wearing. It was no surprise that she preferred to match with Mitsuya in subtle ways. Takashi always gave her the other earring he didn't wear so she could wear it; Hideyo always wore a hair accessory that matched the color of Takashi's shirt, and they both had the same hair color.
"Did you ever match with Mikey?" Hiroki said abruptly, "I know you dated him for a couple of months but I don't think I ever saw you two hanging out." Hiroki ignored the weird stare Hideyo gave him, "I know he still has those purple hair ties you bought him for his birthday last year."
Hideyo stopped. A soft look in her eyes.
"You didn't know that?"
"No." she replied.
"Really? He wears them all the time. He tries to take good care of them so they don't break easily."
"That's good." She hummed, continuing to walk.
"Wait, so, did you? Match with him I mean." Hiroki scooped another bite into his mouth, "This is really good ice cream."
Hideyo rolled her eyes at the off topic comment.
"No, we never matched."
"Why?"
That was a simple question. Hideyo and Mikey dated when they were young, so the idea of doing anything matchy matchy probably didn't cross their minds. They were more concerned with who would get the last Dorayaki, which always went to Mikey, and who would get to sleep on Draken's back after school. Draken always made them play Rock Paper Scissors to see who would get a piggy back ride.
Hideyo shrugged, "Why are you so nosy today?"
[1 day before anniversary]
[11 am]
The best seat in school was always the window seat. Hideyo would always look out the window at her desk and daydream about the possible outcomes her life could have taken. It felt like an escape from reality. When she was at school, she could pretend to be a normal fifteen-year-old for a few hours. She was well-liked despite being a member of a violent gang. And it's not that she didn't enjoy having friends outside of gangs, but she wished she could just blend in with a crowd.
She wondered if Hiroki felt the same way when he was at school. Maybe he got some slack since he was friends with the charismatic brothers.
What was it like to be a regular kid with a normal family? Hideyo often found herself jealous of the other kids because they got to live regular lives.
