The Truth

Chapter 1

Henley:
"Hey flyboy? Are we going to take off or just sit here all day?"
"Ya, ya. We are taking off in five," says Alex.

Alex and I have been best friends since high school. I met him at one of my volleyball games. I went flying towards the bleachers with my eyes on the ball, expecting to get it. Instead I go flying into the bleachers and fall right on him. After that we were best friends. He was funny, sarcastic, and sweet.

We take off from base to the location radioed in. When we land, I jump out of the chopper with my gun out ready to return fire to anyone who shoots at me. I reach one of the injured and holster my gun. I open the medical bag and check him over. He has a gunshot wound to his shoulder and one on his thigh. They are both bleeding steadily, but I think he might make it. After checking on the other two injured, we put them in the chopper and take off. Once back at base we quickly take them out of the chopper and wheel them into the cash unit.

"Shit," yells Alex.

"What's wrong," I ask, concerned.

"They just radioed in again." He frowns.

I look at him with a confused expression. "Well I don't see the problem."

He looks at me funny. "You don't understand. Mike is flying in. They are taking you with them since you are the best medic we have."

I sigh. "Well then I have to go. People need me. I have to help them."

When I am almost to Mikes aircraft, Alex grabs my arm and spins me around. "Promise me you will be careful and come back." he says.

I kiss him on the cheek. "I promise," I say.

I climb into the aircraft, taking off into the sunrise.

When we are landing at our location point, there is a loud boom. I see a flash of light and next thing I know the door is being ripped off the aircraft and I am going with it. I land hard on the ground. My vision is blurry and I can't move. I feel like one big bruise and when I take a breath I cry out in pain. I stay still and just pray that I will get to see Alex and my family again.
