Chapter 25

The track team was just goofing off now because our practice ended awhile ago. Only reason we still are on the track is because Coach Baker said he had to talk to the football team and track team together.

"Ok, Track team huddle up!" Coach Baker yelled so we could hear him. We all started jogging to the middle of the field

"Now I said at the start of the season, you win, you get recognized. Well, we won. 'The L.A Tribute' has announced their regular season awards, and I'm humbled as I tell you that I have been named division coach of the year" we all cheer

"Thank you, all right. For real, I could not have won without each and every one of you players giving your all and that includes the division player of the year, Mr.Spencer James." We all cheer for Spencer

"That's not all. As you can see I have called over the track team. Track has been doing so well that they are combining football and track booster party's and etc. So please give it up for the track division player of the year, Ms. Jaaliyah Moore." They cheered for me

"AHHH YOU DID IT STINKKK" My friend Brooklynn poked my stomach over and over again

"Brooo I told you to stop calling me that" I groaned and swatted her hands away

"The scouts want to see more from you Jaaliyah. So in order for that to happen, you will now be doing hurdles and jumping (long jump and triple jump)"

"The hell-. They asking for too much now." I said to Brooke and she laughed

"All right. I'm proud of all of y'all. We got a scrimmage on Monday, so, be better . You heard?" Coach Baker crossed his arms

"Yes, sir!" We all said in unison

"You heard?"  Coach Baker said louder

"Yes, sir" we said louder

"All right, hit the showers. Spencer, Jaaliyah, stay behind." He walked away from the group

"Ouuu yo ass done fucked up." Brooke said as my track team nodded in agreement

"I'm sure I did. It's either about that fight or....idk." I shrugged them caught up with Spencer and Coach Baker who were waiting for me

"Hey, I'm sorry I missed that practice, Coach." Spencer apologized

"I know you've been going through a lot. Both of y'all" he looked at me and I avoided his eye contact

"Times gonna take care of that, but, uh, I need you here Spence."

"Seems like everybody wants me to be somewhere right now" as Spencer said that I zoned out

FLASHBACK

"Hey, you know what I'm gonna do now?" Shawn said as he started opening his apartment gate

"No. You tell me." Coop said. I can tell she had a smile on her face

"I'm gonna make a new life for Maya. Start over. Maybe you can come with us. Start over, too. You know what I'm saying?" I smiled at him. Bro this is corny as hell but I'll be corny for this whole day cause I'm so proud of him.

"Hey,Shawn! This here is for Bonez." Shawn pushed me behind him and took the bullets. His body dropped to the ground as I screamed.

END OF FLASHBACK

I zone back in when I feel someone shaking my shoulder slightly

"Jaaliyah, you good?" Spencer's eyes were filled with worry

"Oh, yeah, I'm fine. I'm sorry, what were you saying?" I shook it off and smiled

"We've been invited to a ceremony where they want to give us our awards. I think it could be for the both of you."
