Orson paced around the castle, head full of fog. If Hannah was going to bring Elysia back here, he needed to make a plan. Make a statement. Find a way to get her to come to him.

Based on the letter she wrote him, she had no intention of seeing him again. So she was probably planning on ignoring him in such a way that would not breach common decency or royal etiquette. Perhaps he could roam the halls in disguise once the day was done? No, no. All eyes would be on him at all times, a disguise was out of the question.

His red eyes glanced down at his left hand. No one had noticed that he'd been wearing it for days now, and if they did, no one said anything. Perhaps they thought he was mourning again and wanted to leave him in peace?

Stopping to look at a reflective surface, he gave himself a once over.

His parents were very tall, so it was no surprise that he was too. Though, unlike his parents, he had put himself through vigorous combat training over the last century and was now wider than them both.

His father never understood why Orson needed to learn to fight with weapons when he was a vampire, but once the prince saw how easily something could be taken from him, he knew he needed to be strong enough to get it back.

It was a bittersweet feeling. She had left him so long ago and still, he spent every waking hour making himself better.

For her.

Back then it was just a hero's pipe dream, a way for him to cope with his loss of her. But now that the very reason for his transformation suddenly burned herself back into existence, he didn't know how to feel.

Would it be enough? Could he be enough? Could he give her a life that was enough for her? She left without a goodbye, with no warning of what would happen to her.

The night she had disappeared, before Orson even knew she was gone, his father barrelled into their home, sobbing. Elysia's mother, Sapphira, was dead. And she, her father, and her baby brother were nowhere to be found. Their kingdom turned to chaos - The power vacuum sweeping through the lands unchecked before Max had stepped in.

They held a funeral for Sapphira and laid her to rest beside three empty caskets. Their family mausoleum was closed forever, and Max and Ruby never looked back. It was much harder for Orson. He had to watch them bury the only piece of Elysia he had left.

He visited as often as he could, but as the decades went on, the visits became fewer and farther between. And before he knew it, twenty years had passed since the last time he curled up in the marble structure and found himself talking to an empty coffin.
