The day seemed to drag on. Working at a restaurant wasn't the best on a regular day (anyone in customer service could vouch for that), but on that Tuesday, Y/N truly felt like she could die from fatigue.

Her day was filled with going from table to table, providing menus and napkins to messy kids who hadn't yet learned how to eat without causing chaos. The diner was stuck in a rush for most the day. It was only at about 1:00 pm when the bell above the doors came to a halt, signaling that she could finally take a breath.

She rubbed her sleepy eyes and leaned against the bar counter. Exhaustion pooled in her chest and anchored her to floor. And when she heard that damn bell again, Y/N was ready to tear the doors off their hinges.

Like a robot, she turned on her heel and grabbed some menus. Plastering on her best customer service smile, she made her way over to the patrons.

The four boys sat laughing and conversing amongst themselves. Y/N recognize their long hair and rambunctious energy. The Monkees were regulars at Jamie's Diner. She always envied their energy.

"Good afternoon, fellas. What can I get you started with today?"

Micky held a hand to his heart in mock pain, "What, Y/N? No kiss 'hello'?"

She tiredly smiled and gently hit her friend with her notepad. A laugh bubbled from her lips when he dramatically fell onto Mike. The Texan pushed his rowdy pal off and began to order his food. They went around the table ordering Cokes and burgers (except Peter; he ordered his favorite apple pie), cracking jokes like always to try and brighten the waitress's day.

"And for you, Davy?"

Davy looked up from his menu and boyishly grinned, "Your number would be fantastic, thanks."

"I'm afraid that's not on the menu," Y/N lightheartedly rolled her eyes, "Want your usual?"

A cheeky pout etched onto his lips as he nodded. The girl walked off with a smile and he couldn't help but watch her go. A quick pep talk later, Davy Jones stood and was making his way up to her. As the waitress stood behind the counter, silently counting her tips, she felt a presence sit in the chair in front of her.

Davy sat with a charming smile and Y/N couldn't help but be aware of her frumpy uniform compared to his blue flowery shirt. She crossed her arms and tried to keep her voice steady.

"How can I help you, David?"

The chestnut haired boy couldn't help but laugh. He leaned his elbows on the counter and put on his best smirk.

"Are you sure your number isn't on the menu?"

Y/N felt her ears burn due to his persistence. David Jones was always jokingly flirting with her while she worked. But that's all she assumed it was: joking. To think he was truly interested in her made her heart do flips like a highschooler. The fear of rejection scared her away from exploring that possibility, though.

She nervously cleared her throat, "Yes, I'm sure. Could I interest you in a milkshake instead?"

The Monkee genuinely smiled and bit his lip, "Chocolate,
please."

As she turned to make said milkshake, Davy looked back at his friends. They were giving comical thumbs up and slightly inappropriate motions. He mouthed at them to 'shut up!'. When Y/N faced him again, he blinked innocently.

"Here you are, one chocolate milkshake for Davy Jones."

He thanked her softly, feeling himself begin to perspire. He coughed under his breath and poked at the drink with the red and white striped straw.

"You know, Y/N, there's this movie playing at the theatre down the street..." Y/N froze from wiping the counter as he spoke. His voice was shaky and unsure, a complete 180 from how he usually was.

"...I was thinking we could see it together. If you want to, that is..."

"Yes!"

Davy's head shot up at her immediate answer. He took note of her shaking hands and felt his heart soar.

Resuming her wiping, Y/N spoke without making eye contact, "I mean— yeah, yeah. That sounds fun..."

Unable to stop the grin from growing across his face, Davy reached over and touched her hand. He finally caught her eyes and stared with fondness.

"I'll pick you up at eight?"

"At eight."

The Brit made his way back to his bandmates with an accomplished look on his face. They whooped and cheered, completely ignoring that Y/N could still see and hear them. She giggled and pressed a hand to her cheek. She felt the warmth under her palm.
