Beth had taken a city bus home from prom and fell asleep as soon as she got back. When she woke up, she had two missed calls and four missed texts from Jack.
"where are you?"
"beth"
"ig you left without me"
"i told them about us"
She sighed and clicked on his contact in her recent calls. He picked up on the first ring.
"Beth thank god. I couldn't find you last night."
"Yeah, I left after your friends and fuck buddy found us in the bathroom. Didn't wanna embarrass you any further."
"No...Beth I wanted you to follow me out of the bathroom. I told them about us."
"Told them what? That I'm your pity fuck?"
"That we're together. That I love you."
"Sure."
"I did, ask any of them."
"What about those girls?"
"Who cares about those girls?"
"Clearly you do."
"I haven't slept with anyone else since I played you my mixtape in November."
"What?"
"Yeah. When I sent you those roses and told you I loved you, I meant it. I wasn't gonna jeopardize that any more."
"Do you want to come over?"
He hung up without an answer. In a minute flat, he was opening her bedroom door. Beth got up from her bed and ran to meet him. Jack opened his arms and brought her close, picking her up and spinning her in a circle.
"I was so mad at you last night you asshole," Beth said with a small smile. "I thought you just abandoned me."
"Never. I told my friends that we're together. I don't care what anyone thinks anymore."
"We're together?"
"Well since November I've just kinda thought...but I guess I never asked you. Do you want to be my girlfriend?"
"Yeah, yeah I do."
Jack cupped Beth's face in his hands and kissed her.
"And what I said is still true, I love you Beth."
"I've always loved you Jack."
...
The summer before their senior year was euphoric. They spent long days tanning at the lake and walking around the mall. They cuddled in bed for hours and ate dinner with each other's families. Things were finally right.
Jack was constantly working on his music and was eager to play new songs for Beth. It was always weird to hear a lyric he had written about her, but it also couldn't be more flattering. It showed her that he was thinking about her always and that more importantly, he wanted people to know about their relationship.
Even when school started back, Jack's affections didn't wane. He would drive Beth to school and walk her to class. His friends no longer made fun of her. They never thought that Jack would get into a relationship, so they thought that if he saw something in Beth, she must be alright. Girls looked at them with resentment in the hallways and for some reason, Beth loved that. She loved knowing that of all the girls he had slept with, she was the one who finally made Jack settle down. After all they'd been through, Beth didn't think anything could tear them apart.
