the aftermath

Saying yes to the man who had been an essential part of her life for as long as she could remember wasn't as easy for Beth as it should've been. It came with a lot of complications. How was she going to explain this to her long-term boyfriend? Or her parents who had no idea she and Jack even spoke anymore? But after Jack proposed, she decided those things could wait until the next morning.

The limo picked up the new fiancés from the restaurant. A new bottle of champagne was in the place where the first bottle had been when they were on the way to dinner. Jack popped the bottle and Beth drunkenly giggled, kissing the man she would finally be able to spend the rest of her life with.

They had barely made it into the apartment before Jack was unzipping Beth's dress. For the first time since she had been in Louisville, she let him undress her, closing the bedroom door behind them.

"I've always loved you Beth," Jack told her in between kisses as they fell onto the bed.

"And I'll always love you."

...

The couple awoke the following morning both completely naked and keeping each other warm by cuddling close to each other's bodies. Jack was still fast asleep, snoring quietly when the sun coming in through the window woke Beth.

"Jack," she said quietly.

"Hm," he mumbled in response, kissing her cheek with his eyes still closed.

"Are you gonna move to New Haven?"

He opened his eyes and rubbed them.

"What?"

"Are you gonna move to New Haven? You know I'm still in law school."

"Oh, well I hadn't really thought about it," he shrugged, intertwining their fingers.

"What do you mean you didn't think about it? You didn't think about our future before you proposed?" Beth asked jokingly, still giddy from the night before.

"No, no I did. Yeah, we'll keep the place here for when we come home and get a place in New Haven until you finish school. Are you gonna travel with me?"

"As much as I can."

"Sounds like a plan," Jack responded, kissing his fiancé lightly.

The two were in awe with one another and the fact that they had somehow made this work after so many years.

"I've gotta go home to tell Christian and pack up my stuff..."

Beth didn't know how she would explain this to Christian, that she hadn't actually been helping her parents pack up to move, but that she had been with Jack. That the boy she always told him not to worry about had proposed, and that she had said yes. That their devoted three year relationship was over.

"Oh shit, yeah. Let me come with you."

"I don't know that that's the best idea."

"Cmon, it'll be fine. I'll help you pack and we can look for a place for us."

"Okay, we'll leave tomorrow."

Beth knew she hadn't made a mistake by telling Jack she would marry him, but she wasn't sure how she would convince the rest of the people in her life of that.
