As I try to get up, he pulls me back down on the couch. "Don't," he instructed. I was stunned. What the hell is his problem? I was about to yell at him when I notice... that there's sadness in his eyes even though he is not looking at me. His eyes are still on the pages of the open book but there's sadness in it so I just sit quietly next to him. And I wait... It took about 5 minutes, I think. Or perhaps longer because it feels like forever that we are both engulfed in silence when he finally spoke. "Laura and I broke up on that day. Or more precisely, I broke up with her on that day," he started. "And I let her leave, driving her car alone in the rain," he said.
I wait for him to continue but he didn't say anything anymore after that. He wasn't even looking at me when he said it. His eyes are still vacant, staring at the book and I can't take it anymore. This guy! So, I pull the book away from his hand and put it back to the side table. I notice how weakly he had held on to the book since I managed to grab it quite easily. "So, are you blaming yourself for it?" I asked.
