summary: fem!reader has a nightmare about hotch post break-up and goes to his house to make sure he's okay

You're standing in front of the burning house again. If it weren't on fire it would be perfect. A ranch style house that's painted the perfect shade of blue and has a swing on the porch. All of that's being destroyed by the flames that engulf the house. It resembles a house you had looked at with your ex boyfriend Aaron Hotchner.

It wasn't the first time you'd had this nightmare. You say nightmare because it brought up all the unresolved feelings you had for him, but this time something is different. You almost turn away but then you see something move in one of the windows. You're running towards the house before you can think because Aaron's in there.

You had to get him out, you couldn't let him die in that house. You try to kick in the door to get to him. After a few moments struggling with it, you get it open and step into the house. Everything inside is covered in clouds of smoke and soot, various shades of grey and black. Your lungs gradually fill with smoke as you whip your head around, looking for Aaron. You spot him sitting on the floor in the corner of the living room and rush over to him, and pull him into a hug.

"Aaron, what are you doing? How did you get in here? Why aren't you trying to get out?" You shake him a bit, noticing how glazed over his eyes are but it doesn't help.

He doesn't respond, just slumps back against the wall. You lean forward and kiss forehead, trying to breath in his scent for a moment. It's muted by the smell of everything burning around you but there's hints of pine and mahogany that shine through.

There's a loud cracking noise that comes from above you and you look up to see part of the ceiling caving in and blocking the front door.

"Don't worry, I'm gonna get us out here." You reassure him, though he's practically unresponsive, staring into space with a blank look on his face.

You stand and start to walk throughout the house searching for a way out. The smoke is finally starting to affect you and you find yourself coughing non stop. There are no other doors and suddenly the windows that were present before are gone. You and Aaron are effectively trapped inside the house with no way out. When you make your way back to him he finally speaks.

"Stay with me?" He croaks, coughing.

"Of course I'll stay with you baby." You take his face in your hands, nuzzling your nose against his.

The air is getting thicker and more of the house is caving in but the two of you wrap yourself around each other in the corner of the house.

_____

You're knocking on Aaron's door frantically when he finally throws it open, the look of annoyance on his face disappearing as soon as his eyes land on you.

"Y/n? What are you-"

"Oh thank fuck." You breathe, throwing your arms around him. He returns the hug immediately, burying his face into your hair. You smell just like he remembers, like apples and clean linen.

"Are you alright?" He murmurs into your hair. You pull back to look at him, your eyes retracing every line of his existence. He was alive, that's all that mattered.

"I had this dream about you and I just had to know you were okay. I had to know that you were alive. But now that I know I can go, I'm sorry I woke you. And Jack, oh my goodness I'm an idiot." You ramble, running a hand over your face.

"No, no it's alright. You didn't want to just call?"

"I had to see you." You explain, tears pooling in your eyes, your grip on his arms tightening.
