Prologue
The reason why I have a great passion of hate towards my birthday is because of one night. Twelve years ago, to be exact.
It wasn’t like I had received a vision from god to know what was going to occur that night. That night it had been raining restlessly, but none of us had paid attention. The thundering rain could have been a sign that our lives were in danger because it had also been raining when my mom died. I guess we were preoccupied with happy thoughts. We were just going out to dinner like any other regularly family. However, we never dreamed that we would become orphans just like our parents were.
Before we entered the vehicle, I told my dad that something didn’t feel right. i felt sad inside for no particular reason and repeatedly told my dad I didn’t want to go anymore but he insisted. I guess he wanted me to have a great birthday, but whatever the reason was- which I guess was positive; ended negatively. He told me he would always protect me no matter where he was and I believed him. It was at that time that I had an urge to look at the sky and when I did- I felt another pang of sadness in my chest. I squeezed my dad’s hand tighter as I blinked up at the sky. I realize that some people think of the sky as a beautiful thing however, I think of the sky as the worst thing that ever walked on the face of earth. The day my mom died of breast cancer it had been raining and it was just my luck that I decided to rain on that day. The sky was dark and there was no sign of light. The rain fell slowly, painfully and lifelessly unto the ground as if driven by an unknown force. As I watched, I felt a strong desire to cry but I quickly erased that strain of though; today was my night and I was going to enjoy it whether or not I wanted to.
We entered the car and I sat in the back with my brother. My dad kissed both of us on our foreheads and buckled my brother in the car. He quickly got back into the car and put the doors on child lock. He then proceeded to drive us to our destination which was our favorite restaurant and play place: McDonalds.
As he drove, he told us the well-known story of how he met my mom. She was a waiter at McDonalds and he was just visiting the town with his friends. As they went to get their order, he was playing around with his friends and didn’t see her until she was dripping with his sprite. The sprite that he was holding five seconds before his best friends knocked it out of his hands. He apologized about a million times and she accepted every time until everyone was staring at them. After that awkward introduction between them, he went back to his friends and as they were leaving, he wrote his number on a piece of paper and gave her because he was too embarrassed to ask. My mother, being the nice lady she was called him and he freaked out when he answered the phone. He hanged up on her. He called her again and apologized and then asked her to go on a date with him. They got married a year later and then my brother and I were added to the family.
As he finished the story, someone crashed into the back of our car. A loud bang rang in the air from the collision, filling the once comfortable silence that filled the air seconds before. Now, we were all screaming and very frightened. The force of the impact sent our car spiraling away from the road lane. The tires screeched loudly as it happened and the window on the driver’s side shattered as the old and already used car swerved to the left, to the right and finally slammed blindly into the tree. My ears rang as I heard metal falling to the ground. I felt the sting of my seat belt digging into me painfully as I winced. Adrenaline rushed through my veins shaking me to the core. My dad was thrown around like a ragged doll. Everything that followed the accident happened very slowly because I had fallen into a coma of shock. I saw my father twist around painfully from the driver’s seat to check up on us. He never failed to amaze me. My face paled immediately as I looked at the scene in horror.
He had hit his head on the steering wheel so hard that it had created a dent on his forehead. Blood was gushing out of his head faster than the speed of light. My three year old brother wailed from the car seat next to me. “Daddy got a boo-boo,” he stopped to say in between his cries.
My Dad’s gray-blue eyes stared straight into my eye sockets and he said, “Ronny, you have been the best daughter your mom and I could ever have. I know I’m about to die and hopefully join your mother in heaven. Always remember that I love you and your brother no matter what happens. The only thing I ask of you is for you to protect your brother and … His eyes rolled to the back of his skull and he stopped breathing. He looked like a man had robbed him from living.
That is the moment everything started kicking in and I rushed forward to open the car. But it wouldn’t budge. My brother was still screaming at the top of his lungs and my head was aching badly. I quickly remembered about the phone in my dad’s pocket. As I turned my head painfully to retrieve the phone, I saw police cars and ambulances coming in a distance. Tears sprang from my eyes and rushed down.
I diverted my attention back to my dad and held in the scream that threatened to come out. His head was bent at an unnatural angle and his lifeless body slouched to the right of his seat. As I was looking at my dad – the ambulances and police cars arrived. They surrounded us and also blocked any cars from passing. I instinctively moved closer to my brother and held him protectively but he wouldn’t stop crying. Then I remembered the song my dad use to sing to us at bedtime that we loved and sang it to him.
I remember tears streaming down your face
When I said, "I'll never let you go"
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said, "Don't leave me here alone"
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight
Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound
Don't you dare look out your window, darling,
Everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold on to this lullaby
Even when the music's gone
Gone
Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound
Please tell me if you likey J or not likey! L Thank you.
