That happened 12 years ago and I still remember it as clearly as it happened yesterday. The reason why is because it haunts me at night.
“Ronny. Ronny? Hello, are you there?’’ I quickly stepped out of my daydreaming and stared at one of my best friends. “For real girl, you can’t expect me to do all the work.” She gazed at me sympathetically as I remembered where I was- the worst orphanage that the world had ever dreamed of having. Although I knew she meant well, I still hate that look of sympathy. “Sorry Selena, I was just”… “Don’t mention it”, she replied brightly. Bipolar much?
“Oh and by the way- Miss Mortisenter is calling for you; she said it’s very important”. Miss Mortisenter was the mean woman who ran the orphanage. She ordered everyone in the orphanage including all the other staffs who worked at the orphanage. All the orphans had to work every morning from six am to nine pm at night. Miss Mortisenter never tried to pitch in to work. Her only work was to yell at the orphans and give them more work. She especially hated me maybe it was the fact that I stood up to her every time she gave me work. I always ended up getting double the amount of work, though. Speak of the devil; there Miss Mortisenter was standing at the corner of the doorway. “Veronica since you have decided to disobey me you will stay up scrubbing the stairs until they shine and also dusting the windows,” Miss Mortisenter said smiling evilly. Then she turned around and sashed her way back out.
“You can tell me to do all the work in the world but you wouldn’t break me,’’ I screamed down the stairs. Selena was staring at me like I had gone nuts. “Was that really necessary,’’ she whispered into my ear. “No,” I said grinning back at her. “But you know me- I always talk back no matter what”. She shook her dark brown curly hair back and forth. “Let’s get to work,” I said and we started washing dishes, doing dirty laundry and also giving all the three year olds baths. The little kids always reminded me of myself when I arrived at the orphanage. At first I was scared and the older kids use to bully me around. That is when my two best friends; Ashley green and selena Tay came in and rescued me. We protected each other and also never let anyone come near my little brother. Of course now that he is taller than all of us; six feet tall to be exact, he always tries to act like our hero.
At four o’clock we stopped working and went to eat lunch. Everyone had the same kind of food; the baked potatoes we ate yesterday. It wasn’t rotten yet. I silently thanked God for that. Jace Haden, my brother walked to my table with a cocky smirk on his face. I turned sideways to look at what he was smirking at only to see Ashley drooling over him like a fool. Common, can you be any more obvious. She was supposed to be playing hard to get not worshipping the ground my little brother walked on. I mean, he had blond hair and blue eyes and cute little dimples but he wasn’t that hot.
He stopped at our table and sat down next to selena, conceited jerk! He knew Ashley had a crush on him. Duh! I scooted closer to Ashley and pinched her on the leg. “Hey, what was that for,” she yelled glaring daggers at me. Jace looked at us like we were crazy. “What’s up little sister,” my brother finally said smiling at us. “Hey,” Ashley said smiling at him eagerly. “Oh God, please help this little girl,” i muttered silently to myself. And then louder I said, “Nothing except from the fact that the witch from the west decided to make my life harder.” “Poor baby,” he said. “But you shouldn’t have provoked her though”. Selena was eating quietly as usual, always the shy one unless when something really bothered her. We chatted silently as the clock struck five. That night I worked until my bones ached and fell asleep at one am in the morning. What a great day!
