The next morning, Preston awoke seeing white. This isn't my room. What..." Then he realized: he was at the rebel camp. He sat up and saw a shadow outside his tent. Guards, he thought. Preston sighed as he stood up and put on his red coat. He pulled back the tent flaps and the two guards turned to stare at him. Preston started to make his way towards Washington's tent and he could feel the guards following him.
When Preston arrived at the tent, he saw the General along with Joseph Warren and Samuel Adams standing beside him. Sam glared at Preston as he approached. Warren also gave him a weary look. "What's going on?" Preston asked.
Washington sighed and addressed Preston. "Somehow, General Gage has found out that we know about his plans to attack us and is prepared for our ambush."
"And I wonder who told him," Sam said, still glaring at Preston.
"Now Sam," Warren said. "Do not jump to conclusions." Warren then turned to Preston. "You have to understand the coincidence if it is one. As soon as you show up, General Gage knows our plans."
"But I haven't left the camp. Ask the guards who are always at my heels."
"They could be in on it," Sam said.
"No, they couldn't," Washington said. "Those are the Life Guards. They were specifically assigned to protect me. We do have to find the traitor before it's too late. Dismissed."
Everyone left Washington's tent and Preston went back to his. Once he was inside, the guards stationed themselves outside the tent once more. Preston took off his coat and was about to throw it onto the bed when he saw a folded piece of parchment there. He sat his jacket down and unfolded the paper.
Thomas Preston,
You must know by now that the whole camp suspects you are the traitor, but to tell the truth, I am. As soon as you finish reading this the guards outside your tent are going to confiscate this paper and burn it. Then, you will have no evidence against me and no one will believe you.
W.T
Preston just stared at the letter, shocked. The two guards came into the tent and yanked the paper from his hands. When Preston protested, one of the guards came in and shoved Preston back. So they are in on it! Preston thought. The two guards silently left. What am I going to do now?"
