I just wanted to explain their dynamic so that no one murders me.
Tommy has had almost every person he knows betray him. Tubbo abandoned him on accident for Ranboo and Wilbur died. Techno became secluded and turned against the revolution, he also executed Tubbo. Phil, though he was his father in my universe, was never a good farther. He was more like a friend but he was better to the older boys, Wilbur and Techno, and sometimes forgot about Tommy unintentionally.
Sam has never had a family, Jean did terrible things to him which you will learn more about in the next book. When he first joined the server, he seemed to become friends with Ranboo, Tubbo, and Micheal which is true. But they already had their own family and they were already good with themselves. Phil also became Sam's friend but he of course is going to care more about his blood children then some random kid who just joined the SMP.
Tommy and Sam are both loners, they always have been but they were both lonely. They both experience hiraeth(I honestly love that word way to much) and wanted to find a home that didn't exist. That part in the last chapter when Sam was talking about feeling empty and hollow is a bit of a self projection. But also shows that he's looking for something to fill that space.
Tommy feels the same way, he has the same empty feeling and has been trying to fill it. Every time he got close enough to a person for them to begin to fill that void though, they left him in some way.
When Tommy and Sam first met, they started feeling better around each other and the others noticed this(I'll talk about this more in either the next book or in later chapters). The two began to get closer and eventually got close enough to begin trusting each other even though they both have some heavy trust issues.
Summary: Tommy and Sam helped each other feel whole again.
