Chapter 8: Kyle’s POV:
I motion for Anne to wait before I walk out of the cell and turn to Chris.
“You go in there and watch her, I’ll be back in two minutes.” He nods and turns to open the cell door, “Oh, and Chris?” He turns towards me once more, “Make sure she’s not loosened her bonds or anything and don’t take your eyes off her till I get back, ok?”
“Why? Where you going?”
“I’m going to get a mild sedative for her”
“What if Fin comes back?”
“I doubt it, he’ll be out of it for a while, considering all the medicinal alcohol he tossed down his throat. Besides, I’ll only be a minute.” Chris nods again and turns to walk into the cell. I turn left down the corridor and five minutes later I reach the small hospital wing at the centre of the big bunker. I was in here for two reasons, being this detachment’s doctor; I have to fulfil my main duties: patient observation, diagnosis and drug administration. I am no anaesthetist but having no trained anaesthetist in any of our bases, we have had to make do with doctors. We do have an on-base cutter, a surgeon called Zack, and he’s skilled enough to take care of general emergencies, like the incident that took place about half an hour ago, by himself with maybe a couple of willing helpers. Usually he does prefer that I work with him in such emergencies as our teamed medical knowledge mean that we can contain an emergency much quicker with much less risk than with untrained helpers. But my skills were needed in keeping our ‘high-risk prisoner’ under sedation so that we didn’t have another incident occur.
I walk over towards the office where I grab a mask and white coat and head over to the corner of the hospital where Si lies sleeping, attached to IV’s. Firstly I check his IV then I check the bandages around his wound; everything is fine.
“He’ll be okay in time, but I can’t say whether he will ever psychologically recover from being beaten by a woman.” I hadn’t realised Zak was standing behind me until he spoke, but his calm voice could never evoke fright in anyone. I smile at his comment, knowing that sometimes it was easier to laugh about certain things to keep from going insane. “I gave him morphine as you instructed, but I have to say I’d prefer you to be the one administrating such drugs, you have more experience after all.”
“I will be in future but you know the current situation, I was needed elsewhere…”
“Ye, I know…but hey, what did you come in for? You know I would call you if anything was wrong…”
“Ah yes, I need that wrist contraption with the darts, I want to take Anne to the showers so she can wash…”
“Are you sure that’s a good idea? She’s dangerous, Kyle, even with sleeping darts on you…”
“I know it is but I’m hoping that by showing her a little trust, perhaps she will feel more able to trust us.”
“Well just make sure no one’s using or planning on using the showers when you take her…”
“I will.” Zak hands me the wrist contraption with a dart in it and I attach it to my wrist and pull my sleeve over it.
“Take care, man.” I nod and stride out into the hallway and start walking in the direction of the kitchens just down the hall. It’s late afternoon so everyone should have finished eating. I stride into the kitchen and fill a napkin with bread rolls and cold meats for Anne then I exit to go back to Anne’s cell, grabbing a roll on my way out which I eat along the way. Upon entering her cell, her head shoots up and she eyes me with yet more suspicion. I take the food out of my pocket and hand it to her; I watch her face as a starved expression takes over it before she wipes it away, not wanting to show weakness. Despite her obvious hunger, she does not start eating; I sigh, hating how she still distrusts me.
