"I'm sorry Aaron," Mia said. "There is just too much uncertainty right now in my life. I want to keep you as a friend. Maybe someday, but just not yet."
Aaron nodded, sad but understanding of her situation. He was caught off guard however, when she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him. He followed suit and held her for what felt like hours. She stepped back then, holding her arms with her hand as she looked at the ground.
"I'm going to have some arrangements to make, but I'll catch up with you later ok?" Mia said. Aaron nodded and they went their separate ways. Mia was out of school for about a week as her family came in for the funeral and they laid her father to rest.
The rest of the school year proceeded without any other events of note. Mia and Aaron would still spend time together, but Mia was still hesitant to do anything more serious. As their senior year drew to a close, they both had to decide what they wanted to do after high school.
One day, Mia texted Aaron and asked him to meet her at the local cafe. They greeted each other, taking their seats and placing their orders. Aaron was the first to speak, as was normal.
"So, what did you wanna talk about?" Aaron asked, a little nervous.
"I was curious if you made a decision for what you will do after we graduate?" Mia asked
"Yeah, I have actually." Aaron said, slightly surprised. "I've been accepted to school in Florida in the United States. I'm going to go to become a doctor."
Mia giggled. "That sounds like you. You are always the first to try and help someone out, whether they want it or not." Mia took a sip of tea after blowing to cool it off.
Aaron blushed, not used to getting compliments. "Well, thank you. What about you, have you made a decision?" He asked, taking a sip of his coffee.
"Yeah." Mia replied. "I'm going to become a police officer."
Aaron nearly spit out his coffee as she said that. "A police officer? But why?"
"Well, I wanna help people as well. I just think that is the best way for me to do it." Mia responded, a hint of determination in her voice.
"Well, I guess that makes sense," Aaron responded. "Will you be staying here?"
"Yeah, for now. I may move but I think staying put will be good for now." Mia.
"I guess that means we won't see each other after graduation?" Aaron said sadly.
"No, we won't," Mia said. "But I still want to stay in contact. You are my only friend after all," she said with a smile.
Aaron smiled back. They continued to chat as they finished their drinks and then hugged goodbye.
