It'll Be Okay

"Okay, what the hell is that noise?" Kang Yeosang pushed himself up into a seated position on the mustard yellow corduroy couch. Holding his wine glass tightly in his fist, he tilted his head to glance at the offending apartment wall. He then flinched back when another wail of distress sounded.

"The noise?" Jung Wooyoung flipped his shaggy dark hair out of his face, glancing up at the elder from his spot on the cold hardwood floor. "You're worried about the noise? What about the smell? It's like curdled milk." The younger made a face as his nose scrunched up from gaining another whiff. Wooyoung lifted his own wine glass off the small coffee table and twirled the red liquid around before taking a sip.

The crying sounded for a fourth time, earning a grimace from Yeosang. The beta of the group shifted to the edge of the couch and retrieved the awaiting bottle of wine. He had a feeling that, if he was expected to continue sitting here with the consistent crying, he was going to need much more to drink.

"Is Ms Wang babysitting her grandchildren or something?" Yeosang stated with a raised eyebrow eagerly lifting his glass, he took a large gulp.

"I thought Ms Wang didn't have any children?" Wooyoung questioned in confusion. Yeosang was right, the crying sounded too much like a pup to brush it off as anything else.

Yeosang shrugged. "Maybe she started a child care business or something?"

"I think she's a little too old for that," Wooyoung mumbled.

"Hey," Yeosang warned. "Don't judge somebody based purely on their age. That'll be you one day too."

Park Seonghwa, having heard the entire conversation, shuffled in from the small kitchen with a bowl of popcorn clenched tightly in his arms. Dressed in a pair of ratty sweat pants and an oversized hoodie, the man was a picture perfect model for the friend's movie night. "That" Seonghwa explained, claiming his seat beside Yeosang on the couch, "would be my new neighbour."

"New neighbour?" This perked Wooyoung's interest. Pushing himself off the floor he wiggled his way into the middle seat of the couch. "I didn't know Ms Wang had moved away. You haven't mentioned anything regarding a new neighbour."

"Because he just moved in three days ago," Seonghwa said with a sigh. He had been spoiled the past couple years he'd lived in the apartment – at least in regards to his neighbours. The senior women rarely made any form of disturbance or annoyance. The only occasional noise came from when she would fall asleep watching the TV with the volume up too loudly.

But now Seonghwa's comfortable lifestyle had shifted with the sudden arrival of the newcomer. This had been only the third night and Seonghwa had quickly realized he was unimpressed with the turn of events. Within the three nights, the same events had occurred. Seonghwa could only assume the neighbour's bedroom shared a wall with his living room. And the said neighbour had a pup that apparently had a hard time sleeping.

"Three days ago?" Wooyoung shifted to face Seonghwa with an offended expression "and you're just now telling me?"

Seonghwa had opened his mouth to reply but rather released a groan of annoyance when he heard an ear-piercing cry. He snatched Wooyoung's drink from his hand and downed the burning liquid.

"You don't seem particularly surprised by that," Yeosang stated pointing in the direction of the wall that had gone momentarily quiet.

"I'm not," Seonghwa answered looking longingly at the half filled bottle of wine but knowing better than to drink more. His heavy drinking days had long been left behind him.

"So you mean..." Yeosang trailed off, giving a nod in the offending direction.

"Happens every night?" Seonghwa finished the sentence the younger had started. "Yeah. As far as I can tell, it appears to be a regular occurrence. Every night until well after midnight. It's like the pup finally wears itself out and just passes out. The crying starts again in the morning."
