Author's POV:
Present Day
Clock in the living room struck 10:30 at night when Randeep disconnected the call. He breathed a sigh, rather a heavy exhale with his gritted teeth and threw his phone on the adjacent couch while leaning his head back on the one he was sitting on. His eyes were burning with rage, his chest was heaving with rapid breaths and he had clenched the edges of the couch with his fists. He lifted his head for a moment to have a look at the bottle of Jack Daniel's and the half filled glass, kept on the big center table. Yes, he had had one drink before calling, he needed it to gather that courage but then he refrained himself from having the second one, because he needed to be in his senses while executing what he had planned just an hour before.
He straightened to grab the bottle, uncovered its cap and poured the liquor in the glass to fill it more. He lifted the glass and stared at it for a moment. He wasn't sure if what he had just done was correct or not, he didn't know if it was really needed but there wasn't any point in thinking about it now. The arrow had left the bow. The words had been said. He was ready only for the repercussions now because there can't be any good end result for this, he knew it. He took the glass to his lips and drank it in a haste.
Ughhh....
He was drinking it neat after so long. He squeezed his eyes shut as he felt his throat burning, but the glass didn't move away from his lips. He smacked it on the table after emptying it and smirked to himself. Yes, the alcohol was doing its work. There shouldn't be any stoppage to it now, he mused and filled the glass again. He was feeling good now, it ought to be. He had finally put an end to all the buzzing questions... he had finally taken the step he thought he should've taken long back... he had finally freed himself from the guilt... he had finally... finally vandalized that soft corner in his heart for her... his heart was deserted now... and he hoped it remains... he just hoped that the soft feeling about her, the feeling he couldn't name till date, doesn't come back... he just hoped... And one more glass was emptied.
He couldn't figure if it was the empty bottle or his swaying head that stopped him from drinking further. He hadn't even counted the number of pegs he had had. He rubbed both his palms on his face and dragged them to his head, keeping his elbows on his knees and stayed in that posture for sometime to calm himself down. But it wasn't achieved due to his buzzing phone, which he knew would be just unnecessary notifications on his friends group chat. He got up from his place and walked to the other couch, staggering in his way. Picking up his phone, he just had a glance over it and scorned it. Yes, they were all those unwanted notifications. Of course!! What else do you expect Mr. Randeep Rai? He switched his mobile off and strolled to his bedroom. Thank God! There wasn't anything scheduled for tomorrow. And keeping his phone on the side table, he cowped on the bed and dozed off to sleep.
Randeep squeezed his eyes shut in the sleep itself, hearing something continuously buzzing. He couldn't even open his eyes due to harsh light, he should have drawn the curtains of the bedroom yesterday, he cursed himself in his sleep. The buzzing got silent after a few moments and he sighed. But to his dismay, it started again. He squinted open his eyes and checked for his phone on the side table. It was just a black screen. Why isn't it getting unlocked? He wondered and attempted a few more times by pressing various buttons. Oh no!! It's switched off you idiot!! He muttered a curse again. Then what was it? He changed his side and found his other phone ringing continuously, which was there on the bed. He checked it and saw the security guy's number there.
"Ab kaun aa gaya yaar..." He mumbled before picking the call. "Hellllooo..." he deliberately sounded annoyed.
"Sir, ek madam aayi hai aap se milne..." The security guy informed him.
"Tch... yaar maine kitne baar kaha hai, mere friends aaye toh unko seedhe upar bhejna..." He said irritatingly.
"Nahi Sir, yeh aapki friend nahi hai... yeh..." The security personnel just casually replied.
"Kaun hai? Kya naam bataya?" Randeep queried.
"Sir... Ashi Singh naam bata rahi hai..." The security guy answered.
His eyes snapped open, sleep almost crashing away from them. All his senses worked in emergency mode as if his body received a threat, his heart started pumping more blood as if preparing himself for a war-like situation and he jerked up to sit straight.
"Kyaaa?" He asked again to verify because his body had put him on the peak of a mountain, fearing of tumbling down badly.
"Ashi Singh... Sir..." came the reply.
He closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. Just yesterday night, he had hoped this name wouldn't affect him anymore, and this very morning crushed his beliefs about it. But he recalled the statement by the guard, 'yeh aapki friend nahi hai...' Well, he was right. He couldn't go back from here now. He wanted to stay firm on his decision.
"Haan bhej do unhe..." he replied and sat like a statue, with his face hidden behind his big palms.
