chapter three—the hogwarts express

"DON'T BE RIDICULOUS, Rose, of course you'll pass this year." Avalyn scoffs to her cousin who's stressing about failing Latin this at school. She'd said she might drop the subject completely but Avalyn and Laura had convinced her to keep the language, therefore she can go on to have a better job with more qualifications.

"It's too hard." Rose says defiantly, shaking her head as she sets the table for breakfast, todays the first of September, so first day back for both girls.

"Well then work hard and you'll succeed." Laura's sighs, placing bowls of porridge onto the dining tables and the younger teenager huffs in response, slouching into her seat. Avalyn smiles slightly, eating her porridge and Rose looks at her.

"I'm glad you find this amusing." Rose snaps and Avalyn shrugs her shoulders. "It's easy for you to say, you go to school to learn magic."

Rose's mother goes on to scold her and and Avalyn sighs, going to wash her bowl before trudging up the stairs to throw some extra belongings into her trunk before clicking it locked and pulling it loudly down the stairs.

"I'm going." Avalyn says and Laura nods, pulling the girl into a hug and kisses her cheek in a motherly manner. Rose huffs and hugs her older cousin, squeezing her tightly and smiling at her as she shrugs on her coat and strolls out of the door. She waits for a few minutes before the familiar blue bus comes hurtling around the corner before screeching to a halt before her.

"Welcome to—allo Ava!" Dan grins, showing his crooked teeth and she smiles, accepting his healing hand up onto the bus, seeing the rows of beds containing snoring witches and wizards. "Kings Cross, is it?"

"It is indeed, Dan." Avalyn sighs, sitting down on a free bed and not really being bothered by the fact they slip and move around the bus, having been on it so many times herself.

"What year are y'in now, Ava?" Dan asks her curiously and she looks up from her book that she'd started to read.

"Sixth, sir." She smiles and he nods his head, going back to speaking to the driver of the bus, Eddie. The bus stops suddenly and Avalyn smiles at Dan as she exits the bus, her dark blue dress blowing in the slight September breeze. She drags her trunk along behind her as her short, patent heels click on the cobblestone floors of the station.

"Ava! Avalyn!" Aaron's voice shouts and she turns and sees him and Phoebe leaning against a wall, Phoebe applying some red lipstick and Aaron flicking through a muggle newspaper.
