I know that this was none of my business, but I can't just walk away when a boy's being beaten.

"Hey!" I shouted.

"Leave him alone!" I yelled while I ran towards the women and pushed her. She looked shocked, then she looked angry. She started swinging the broom at me, while the boy was crying on the ground. I grabbed the broom from her hands and threw it to the side. Then I grabbed the boys hand and ran away.

I looked back and saw that the lady when inside her house. Once we were far enough I asked him who was beating him up and why.

"It was my mom," he said softly. I was shocked what kind of mother hits their child with a broom? Or hits their child at all?

"What's your name?" I asked, trying to get his mind off his horrible mother.

"My name's Johnny Cade," he said, while looking at the ground. He seemed kinda shy, but I don't know him so I'm not going to assume.

"And thanks for helping be back there," he added, finally looking at me with a small smile.

He has a cute smile I thought to myself.

"My name's Nyla," I said with a smile of my own.

We talked some more after that and I told him that I used to live in Hawaii when I was younger, but then my dad got a new job so we had to move.

Soon it was dark and Johnny offered to walk me home. I said it was fine because our new neighborhood isn't exactly the safest and I didn't want to risk him getting hurt.

Johnny went back "home" as he called it. He told me that his mom beating him was a normal thing. I just couldn't believe it.

We agreed to meet at the park tomorrow so I could meet his friends. I'm kinda nervous I didn't have much friends in Hawaii and I don't really have friends now. I hope Johnny's friends like me because I really like Johnny.
