Chapter Nine

Ethan's POV

I stare wide eyed at Jack, who is standing patiently at my door. I look over at Haley to realize that she isn't even paying a lick of attention to anything.

I quickly look back over at Jack and shake my head. He keeps his glare as he grabs the door handle and starts to pull, but my door is locked.

I strap on my seatbelt and rev the engine, making Haley jump from surprise. I press on the gas peddle to make Jack back up, but he only stands, now folding his arms again. I roll down my window. "Jack, move your ass before I run over your feet," I scold, but it only makes him step closer.

Jack's lips curl into a smirk as he looks over at Haley. "Hey, uh, Haley. Do you want to know what Ethan, here, had just told me a minute ago?" he asks as he deepens the smirk.

I look over at Haley, who isn't even looking at him. Her head is kept down with her hair washed over her smooth face. She was just crying, and I doubt she would look up just for Jack; she doesn't like him. Or more like he deeply hates her for hurting me. "He told me that he--"

I slap a hand over his mouth and push him back. He stumbles and falls gently into a yellow jeep, causing the owner to holler at him in anger. He smiles apologetically, but I roll up the window before he could interject with another stupid remark. I back out of my car space, then peel it out of the parking lot, happily leaving Jack next to the yellow jeep he had just stumbled into. "What was that all about?" Haley asks nonchalantly.

I glance at her and frown as I glue my eyes back to the road. "Nothing. He's just being stupid," I say through clenched teeth. If anyone is pissing me off right now, it's Jack. He's only making matters worse for me at the moment, and it makes me want to hit a wall.

I grip the wheel so tight that my knuckles appear to be turning white. My body stiffens as I feel Haley's touch on my warm skin. Her hand touches the skin just above my elbow, which makes me shiver a bit due to her extremely cold fingers. "I'm sorry if I kinda... well... made--I don't want you to feel sorry for me, Ethan," she stutters uncontrollably.

I glance at her again to see a hard look on her beautiful face. Feel sorry? Sure I want to help her, but I don't pity her. I know that I wouldn't want that from anybody. "I don't feel sorry for you," I tell her, a hard look on my face as I look back at the road.

I scowl at the road in front of me and don't take my eyes away because I don't want to see her face at the moment. I don't want to see any type of hurt or anger in her right now. "Good," she states, taking her hands away and sitting back into her seat, putting the upper strap of the seatbelt back over her head.

I let out a big breath, then relax my body more as I know that she isn't touching me. She makes me feel very stiff and tense when she's around, or even touches me once.

I turn onto her road, then glance at her again. She's looking out the window with her hands in her lap. She looks peaceful and calm, but that may be different from what she's feeling on the inside. "Are you okay?" I suddenly ask, turning toward the road so I don't tense up again just from her look.

"What do you think?" she asks with a hint of anger in her tone.

I furrow my eyebrows. "I'm just trying to help, Haley. Why do you have to be that way?"
