The next day you woke up to your blaring alarm clock, groaning as you turned it off. You got up slowly and went about your morning routine before going downstairs to see your dad and have breakfast. When you got to the kitchen, you saw your dad sitting at the table drinking a coffee. On the table sat two plates, one in front of him and one in front of the chair to his side. Both meals untouched but still hot.

Ted chuckled softly as you wandered like a zombie through the kitchen to fix yourself a cup of coffee as well. As you walked back to join him, coffee in hand, the two of you started eating in a calm silence for a few minutes before Ted began to talk.

"How’d you sleep?” You looked to your dad as he spoke, he was already dressed and ready for his day but you could still see how tired he was in his eyes.

“Pretty good. Uneventful at least. What about you? Did you even have time to sleep?” Ted gave you a reassuring, though tired, smile as you asked.

“I got a few hours in. What’s going on in your classes?” You gave a sleepy reply, sipping your coffee. Asking a few questions about what Ted would be up to as well.

The rest of breakfast passed in a similar manner. The two of you chatted happily until you’d finished your meal. Once you were both finished Ted took the dishes to the sink to quickly rinse while you got dressed and ready for the day.

The car ride to school was quick, not having much time to have a real conversation so you both just enjoyed whatever the radio DJ was playing. When you arrived at school you gave your dad a quick hug and wished him a good day, and he did the same before you left the car to face another day of academia.

Homeroom was uneventful, as was biology for the most part. Your lab partner for the semester, Lilly, shared an interest in drawing. So you hurried through the day's assignment and spent most of the class drawing small cartoons. Next was maths. You were hoping it’d be a simple lesson and work, like you always did. Maths was your weakest subject next to science. You still did quite good in the class but you struggled more than you were used to. It was a saving grace that Lilly was quite good in science, being able to help you finish classwork quickly.

You walked into the class and made your way to your seat near the far corner. Mrs. Tuttle didn’t have assigned seats but it was established early on who had claimed what seat. The student to your right, Ryan if you remember correctly, dropped his books onto the desk with a loud thump, almost making you jump.

“That was a bit unnecessary, I think.” You threw out the dry remark without looking away from your sketchbook.

“Didn’t leave me much choice, love. How else was I supposed to get yer attention?” The now familiar voice of Murdoc sighed as he flopped dramatically into his seat, quickly telling Ryan to “Bug off! There’s plenty ‘a seats to choose from.” With a snarl before turning his attention to you. You had given Ryan an apologetic smile on Murdoc’s behalf in the meantime.

“I wasn’t expecting to see you today. Definitely not this early, anyway.” It was barely nine in the morning and, even though there was a decent amount of space between your respective rows of seats, you could smell the alcohol already radiating off of him. It’s almost impressive.

“Ye, you and me both, haahaw!” His laugh was a bit more obnoxious than it really needed to be, earning him a stern glare and warning from Mrs. Tuttle. You swallowed the small laugh you felt in your throat before any could be thrown your way.

Murdoc threw the glare right back, his black eye and bruised nose making his look even more intense, until her attention had turned back to start the lesson. He then looked over to you, about to continue the conversation, but he saw you were pretty focused on note taking.

There’s a lot of things that piss Murdoc off, and up near the tippy top of the list was ‘being ignored’. He knew he couldn’t do a whole lot, lest he get kicked out of the class altogether, so he tore out a piece of lined paper and scribbled a note on it. After balling up the paper he tossed it to your desk, the crumpled paper landing right on your notes.

You looked over to Murdoc with a raised brow before trying to discreetly un-crumple the paper. After flattening the page out the best you could you scanned the note quickly and scribbled a reply before tossing the ball of paper back.

Mudz: what yu drawn?

y/n: birds.. don’t  you have notes to be taking?

Mudz: nope. why birds?

y/n: saw some before school. ravens I think. it was cool

Mudz: well your easy to impres huh? Ill hafta show yu Cortez sometime

y/n: you have a pet bird?

Mudz: sort of. why yu takin so many notes?

y/n: because math is hard and I have no idea what’s going on

Mudz: thot yu was some sort of genius or somthin? Ar yu lyin to me??

y/n: no, you dweeb. this just isn’t my best subject

The two of you passed the note back and forth for the remainder of the class. Mrs. Tuttle either didn’t notice or couldn’t be bothered to care. Because between your sub-par aim, making Murdoc have to slink into the aisle to retrieve the note, and the stifled laughing, you were sure you would be called out for it. You were actually a bit sad when the bell rang at the end of class.

“You really are even more of a nerd than I thought you was. And that’s really sayin’ something.” Murdoc teased as you walked out the door into the hall. You just rolled your eyes.

“Yeah, yeah. Make fun of me all you want, Murdy Birdy. I’ll remember that when you need tutoring for finals.” You barely finished your thought before Murdoc was already laughing again.

“What makes you think I’m even gonna show up for finals? It’s like you don’t know me at all!” Murdoc went into a dramatic lament, wiping a fake tear from his bruised eye. You couldn’t help but giggle a bit at the performance.

“Alright, fair point. That’s on me. Which way is your next class?” You didn’t really want to cut the conversation short but your next class was nearly on the other side of the building and you only had a few more minutes to get there.

“Down that way,” He nodded his head down the hall behind him. “West hall. Where’s yours?” Murdoc still had a pleasant smile on his face from laughing. Even though he looked like he had been mistaken as a pinata he was *almost* cute when he smiled.

“Aw, mine’s the opposite way… I guess I'll see you later then, if you’re gonna stick around anyway.”

“That you will.” You both turned to walk off when Murdoc stopped to call out from down the hall. “And 'ave fun with yer birds!” Earning himself a few confused and annoyed glares, before turning back on his way, laughing.
