Nurse Katy

As the picnic goddess and I walked down the slim corridor of our high school leading to the nurse's office, I couldn't help but glance at them. The way they walked reminded me of either a princess or a tired secretary just trying to get her needy boss's coffee in time. No in-between. Either way, they were incredibly fast. Fast enough that I practically had to run to catch up with them. When we got to the door of the office, they opened it and went in without giving me a second glance. After a moment or so, their head popped up from behind the door and gently pushed a wheelchair out to me. They patted it with the cutest smile I'd ever seen motioning for me to sit. I sat down without hesitation and then it occurred to me," wait. I-I don't need a wheelchair, I can walk fine on my own." I told them. I had been so lost in the situation I hadn't even been thinking straight. They stared at me, the smile fading from their face as they cocked their head to the right so that a strand of honey hair that was tucked behind their ear fell out of place," Why, of course, you do darling, you're injured. What else would you do?" my lips pressed together forming a straight line and my cheeks flushed a bright tomato red. I was trying not to get flustered but that was simply impossible when they called me "darling" in that European accent. It was just too much to not make me fall to my knees.

After a moment or two of me staring at them, they came to where I was and practically pushed me into the chair. I didn't have the strength to protest. My knees were already weak enough. As they pushed me through the office they would wave to some of the staff saying things like," oh hello there" or," How are the kids?" and they would answer without paying a second glance my way. Which was understandable. I had made myself invisible in this school. And that was what I wanted. When I saw the door with a piece of construction paper with the label of," Nurse Katy" written with what looked like crayon taped to the door, the beautiful stranger opened the door for me and pushed me inside.

"Hello, nurse Katy? I have someone who fell in the lab and could have a head injury," they said. I figured it might take a while for me to get used to their gorgeous accent. I accepted it. We waited a second for a response from the nurse. Nothing but the shuffling of papers coming from outside. The stranger came around from the back and helped me to my feet. Even though I didn't need it, I felt I needed to accept it. "Well, I suppose we are just going to have to wait for nurse Katy to come...OH. I don't believe I formerly introduced myself because of..circumstances. I'm Oli. Oli Wilder." They said with a bright smile. It was like staring at the sun."What's your name love?" My cheeks flushed at the nickname," Oh um...I'm u-uh..I'm Alex."I said in a low voice that sounded like it came from someone else. "I've always liked that name. Well, it is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance Alex. Do you mind if I call you Al?" They asked politely. I feel like my face will not be bright red around this person."Im-uh sure..ye-yeah that's fine." I said in the same shaky tone. Why was I so nervous? There's nothing to be afraid of. As soon as that winning smile crept on their face I knew I was wrong.

"So..Al. What are your pronouns? If you don't mind me asking of course." They asked. My cheeks heated once again as I said," O-oh yea you're fine...They are uh..they are they/them. And you?"I asked, my breath catching in my throat. For..some reason. I swear I'm usually more confident.''Oh, mine are she/her." She said with a soft smile. I nodded. Her name is Oli Wildin and her pronouns are she/her. I thought, taking a mental note. I hadn't had to meet someone new in a while so I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to register that. They stared at me for a brief moment before asking," So...I saw you were reading Pride and Prejudice. That's my favorite book. Darcy is such a gentleman." She said with a dreamy look in her sandy eyes. Oh. Righ. She's probably straight. Of course, she's straight. I forgot about that. How could I have forgotten about such an import-" Oh but of course Mrs. Bennet is such a beauty. I get such bi panic from that movie my god." She said getting herself flustered. I felt happy at the thought that she, in fact, was not straight. Then that means I have- NO. no. We tried relationships before Alex. They just don't work. I reminded myself.
