His father, I realized he never talks much about his own family. Until now he only talked about his business associates, his works, and most recently her and his relationship. But now, he is opening up more about his family and in turn his very true intentions for coming to Paris.
"Do you know anything about your father?" I asked. "Only this, that he is a well-respected member of the British Society and known by the queen as well. His origin is somewhere in Ireland. Nothing more, he never had told me anything more." That is very awful, I cannot even imagine living like that. Not knowing what my entire truth is.
He stopped at a small place and ordered us something to eat. We took a seat watching over the streets. "Mind telling me why we, why I am dressed into something like this? I look like a sophisticated high maintenance clown." I told him.
He only gave me one of his most secretive small smiles. "You look very fine. You look beautiful Miss Davis. May I say this, that every time I look at you, my heart leaps up of joy." I gave him a sarcastic smile in return. "I never imagined you to be a romantic when there is no involvement of swords. The only time you open your mouth is to give orders to me like I am your employee."
"I still pay you a handsome salary so, your point is?" Can I ever win? No, I can never. Not with his witty remarks and to-the-point answers. He seems to always come prepared for my every query. "The point is Mr. Rodriguez that you only behave like this when you need something from me, so what is it this time?"
"Nothing, I just wish to show you some good time, spend time with you." I shook my head. "As I said you are a miser, who disappears when anyone asks for any money even for a good cause like a charity event. There is no way you are spending your money on dresses or jewelry for me." He was not surprised by my answer.
He picked up his fork and knife and begin to eat. "This is good, you shall try some." He raised his glass. When suddenly by the corner of my eye I saw the same woman who came to visit him in the Opera house. The one he ignored me for? I am not going to let it go this easily.
"Stay here, finish the meal. I will be right back." I didn't show my disappointment that he dared to do this the second time on my face. He leaned in and kissed my lips and on my forehead. "I will be right back to you, love; I promise. I am yours for life, remember this." He walked towards the direction she was in. He was here for her.
I was merely serving as a distraction. I have lost whatever apatite I conjured up for this food. It made me question myself again. Who am I marrying? A man with lots and lots of secrets. Were my devotion and loyalty worth it? I know how secrets are very harmful in a relationship. And he is unrevealing them slowly enough for me to see that even in my entire lifetime I might never be able to know all of them. The more it opens up, the pathway gets darker. I placed my fork down and stood up walking towards them.
I watched them from afar. They were having a conversation which I couldn't hear. But judging from Mr. Rodriguez's expression it was nothing good. She touched his shoulder. He didn't pull back as before. I don't like it, any other woman than me to touch him like that.
I mean, I am not jealous but still if he can behave like that seeing me with other men, do I not have the right to be his fiancée? For real this time? I kept watching them when she leaned in and touch his chest almost as if they were more than just known associates.
I turned around slowly leaving them alone. He had used me for his purpose once again. I don't know about him, but it hurts me being used for his purpose again and again. I left the place and walked through the streets of Paris. There was a thought in my mind that if I wished to know more of his secrets? Would I risk being used by him once again? I walked into a shop that was selling hats. I started to go through the selections.
