Chapter 37

We stood in front of a large door, Atsushi-kun and Akutagawa both trying to open it.

I stood beside the two men, guarding them just in case.

"Do you think you can open it, Katai-san?" Atsushi-kun asked, speaking to Katai-san on call.

"This is an isolated network." Katai-san explained.

"It could be hard to pull off with my connection speed." He said, sighing.

"Then prioritise finding the enemy over opening the door." Akutagawa said blankly.

"If we don't take down the virus controlling the gifted, the boss will die in moments." Akuatagwa said.

"Gotcha. Just a sec, bro." Katai-san said with a cherry voice, making me chuckle.

I saw Akutagawa scowl. "Who are you calling 'bro'? I'll kill you." Akutagawa said as I laughed again.

Akutagawa turned back to me, his eyes softening as they met mine.

I smiled at him before he turned back to Atsushi-kun again.

It was silent as we waited for Katai-san.

"Say, Akutagawa..." Atsushi-kun started, making me tense.

"Why do you think Dazai-san made us work together?" Atsushi-kun asked as I turned away, staring into the darkness.

"The thoughts of a fool." Akutagawa replied, making the corner of my lips tug upwards.

"Anyone who questions Dazai falls into a cognitive prison." Akutagawa said as Atsushi-kun looked at him.

Akutagawa closed his eyes.

"I have two questions." Akutagawa said as Atsushi-kun blinked in shock.

"Why did you participate in this operation?" Akutagawa asked, crossing his arms.

"Why does a coward like you put your life at risk for another person?" Akutagawa asked as Atsushi-kun was silent for a second.

"Because I feel the need to help." Atsushi-kun replied.

"For what reason?" Akutagawa asked.

"Because it's the right thing to do." Atsushi-kun said softly.

"For what reason?" Akutagawa asked again.

This time Atsushi-kun didn't reply.

"What's your second question?" Atsushi-kun murmured softly as Akutagawa opened his eyes and looked at Atsushi-kun.

"When are you going to apologise to y/n?" He asked as both Atsushi-kun and I tensed.

I turned away, staring deep into the darkness.

"What do you mean?" Atsushi-kun asked softly as Akutagawa scoffed.

"You insulted her, perhaps not as much as me, but you still did." Akutagawa said as I swallowed back.

"I'm going to go see if there are any detectors, just in case." I said as I walked deeper underground.

"Y/n-chan." A voice, Atsushi-kun, called, making me pause.

I heard Atsushi-kun walk towards me, footsteps hesitant.

"Let me go with you." He said as I thought about declining his offer but nodded instead.

We both walked into the darkness, Atsushi-kun silent.

"Y/n-chan..." Atsushi-kun started.

I tensed as he stopped.
