Day Three

I looked around searching the crowd. I sighed. I opened up maps on my phone and searched for a possible place that they could be hiding...

Would they be in a house? No... maybe not.

I groaned and locked my phone and found a bench to sit on. I found my eyes darting around the crowd and my hands fidgeting impatiently in my lap.

I jumped at the sudden noise of my company iPhone going off. It was Andrew Hunter, the UK company boss.

I hated him.

"Hello?" I answered. He stopped talking and cleared his throat. I didn't quite catch what he had said but he wasn't really talking to me...

Why am I even an agent?

"Ahem. Uh- Agent Wilkie. T-there's a funeral for Dan tomorrow... I want you to go there and find out what you can about... him..." Andrew coughed. "Right- okay. Uh. I'll just give you the location."

My phone beeped and I looked down at it. He had messaged me an address. But I was confused. How would they know he was dead in the first place? Even if he was... did they have any proof? And funerals had to be planned weeks in advance so they had to have found out within a week after they disappeared. But Andrew didn't know until last week...

I asked these questions to Andrew. "Oh uh. Well... you know how this goes: when someone disappears or dies, we make their death look like an accident and tell it to their families... in our own way." He seemed distracted. Was someone else in the room?

"Well then, what did you tell Dan's family?" I asked. I was getting really tired of him only half paying attention to me.

"Uh. We told them that there was a fire and he was burned badly. We gave them back a dead body that was burned enough so they couldn't see who it was. A-and if they do a DNA test then it will fail... no matter what."

"Why?"

"Because we inject our subjects with - uh, yeah that's correct - and it goes throughout their body while their blood still flows and then it - yeah yeah, I know, just give me a second - then it kills them. Hey um Wilkie... Just get to that funeral tomorrow, okay?"

Then he hung up.

"Well then.." I looked around and sat back on the bench. This is interesting...

Thunder boomed outside and I played with my hands and fingers. My eyes were closed and my ear was open. I had to sleep on my right side because I was practically deaf in my right ear from the explosion.

I was laying in a bed in a spare bedroom in Megan's house. Dan was on the couch and Meg was in her own bed. I opened my eyes and watched the rain fall and drip off the window. It was a calm and soothing sound and I started falling asleep to it.

I opened my eyes and I was surprised by my surroundings. I wasn't in the same room as before. Is this a dream? This must be a dream..

There was my mother standing there with her back towards me and her hair pulled back in a bun, like she always used to have it.

"Mom?" I whispered. She turned towards me. Her eyes were filled with fear and shock. "Mark... I'm hearing the voices again. It's her. I swear it's her!"

"Mom, what are you-" then someone pushed through me and appeared in front of me as if he walked through me. Okay... This had to be a dream.

"Alice sweetie... she's dead. She's gone!" The man yelled. My mother broke down and started crying. I started to walk towards them. Who was that man? He wasn't my father.

When I blinked and opened my eyes again, I found I was back in the guest bedroom in Megan's house.

I sat up and looked around. The rain still poured outside and hit the window, creating the sound that I've always loved. The moonlight hit the rain and seeped through the window to cast a beautiful shadow across the room that hit my legs that were covered by my white blanket.

I sighed and sat up completely. I looked around the barely lit room and spotted the door partly open. I furrowed my eye brows in confusion and got up to check what it was.

I snuck past the door and down the hall. I reached the kitchen and found Megan pouring cereal into a bowl. She turned to get the milk and jumped when she saw me. "Ashley!" She whisper-yelled. I smiled at her. "I went to go see if you were awake and uh you weren't. Did I wake you up? Do you want some?" She pointed towards her bowl of Lucky Charms and I rolled my eyes. "No, but thank you Meg."

She smiled back at me and continued to get the milk. I walked out the kitchen and into the living room. There was Dan sleeping peacefully on the couch. I sat down in the ground a few feet in front of him and watched his sides slowly rise and fall.

I lost track of time but came back to my senses when I realized that the rain had stopped. I looked around and quickly got up. I had no clue when Dan would wake up. I'm sure he was still mad at me or whatever...

So I decided to watch him wake from a distance.
