I look around me. White. Everything is white. From the walls to the ceilings, the white marbled floor to the corridors.
I never did understand the colour white and hospitals.
Looking around made me feel like I didn't belong. I mean, of course my tennis attire and dirty sneakers did not click with the white surroundings but most importantly, I feel like I am too dumb to even be allowed in a hospital.
That's what living with geniuses makes you feel like.
'Paris?Are you listening?'
'Huh?' I look around for the voice but stupid me is just too stupid to realize that the person speaking is standing just infront of me.
'Oh! So sorry, Mia. I zoned out again,' I gave her an apologetic look.
'That's okay. Anyways, I was telling you that your parent's aren't free till 10 o'clock tonight so you should call up your brother to pick you up.' She looked at me worriedly.
'Okay then. I should probably call him now,' I take out my cellphone and assure her that everything's fine.
Mia is the only person I talk to in this hospital.
I mean, I've been coming here since I was in 6th grade and she is the only person I talk to. But sadly, not much.
Being a nurse, she has to attend to her patients and that leaves me sitting alone in the relaxing lounge.
In fact, I am doing just that right now. I called Eddie a minute earlier and he said that he'd reach in 5 minutes or so.That leaves me doing nothing.
Maybe I'll do some exploring for a change.
I walk down the corridor and stop at the end of it. There are some pictures on the wall and two of my parent's.
Shame on me. I mean, there are photos of my parent's on the hospital's wall and me? I walk around the hospital in my tennis sneakers.
It won't be long before Eddie too has photos of himself on different walls and the only place my photos will be?
In the family photo album and my cellphone.
'Maria Sharapova?'
Huh?
Maria Sharapova in this hospital?
Where?
I quickly look back in haste to catch a glimpse of my idol.
But no, there was no Sharapova.
Only Cory Jackman. No big deal.
Only the hottest, coolest and most popular senior of my school. No big deal.
But before I can ignore the weird looks he is giving me, he starts walking towards me.
God save me from his harsh comments.
'Apologies little girl, you look like Maria Sharapova from behind so I mistook you for her. Though you really don't look like her up close.'
He just killed me inside. Gah.
I can't form words. Shit! I really need to think of a smart reply right now.
'Wait. I think I know you. Eddie's sister right?' He looks at me expectantly.
At that, I can only nod.
'Sorry, I really did not recognize you. I only see you at school that too, once in a blue moon.'
I widen my eyes at that. Once in a blue moon, he said?
I am so invisible.
Again, before I can reply to that I hear a very clingy voice.
Emphasis on 'clingy'.
Belonging to no other than Cora, his very clingy girlfriend.
Must they really have similar names?
'How are you feeling Cory darling? How's your arm?' she said in a high- pitched tone.
Only then did I realize that there was something wrong with his arm. I wonder what.
And keep wondering I shall because the next moment I looked at them, Cora pulled him away from me and in the process, giving me a filthy look.
I hate her very much but then again, I hate all the girls who are associated with Cory.
Eddie had reached the hospital just seconds after my encounter with the most popular couple in school. The entire ride home I was in a mess.
Cory talks to me for the first time, a moment I've been waiting for my whole life, and I just stay zipped. Completely.
'Paris? Are you fine?' my brother wakes me up from my nightmare.
'um... yeah. Why?' I play around with the songs in the car.
'It's nothing. You looked really shaken. Anyways, a friend of mine will be dropping by tomorrow so please don't scare him away,' he said with a smile.
'Yeah sure. I'll make sure I don't go all hulk on him.'
Maybe I'll do just that. It's a good break from what happened today.
