'Paris! Paris Jenkins!’

I shot my head up and focused on the voice. It was Mr. Lodge, my 57 year old algebra teacher and he looked pissed.

'Umm... yes, sir?’ I looked towards my right where Kira was sitting, begging her to help me.

'You know, Paris, knowing your brother, I would never have thought you’re his sister. You don’t even listen to half the things I teach in class. Even now I was almost screaming your name and I find you out of it.’

Not knowing what to say, I put my head down to avoid eye contact with him. Why do bad things only happen to me? There are other students in my class who have the same level of IQ as mine but I don’t ever see them being attacked in the same way as I am. Not even Fred, who is almost as stupid as the 12 year old version of me.

'I am sorry, sir. I won’t repeat it again.’ I looked up at him to show him how sincere I was.

'And it better not. Because if you don’t improve your grades, I’m going to fail you this semester, and you will wish you never zoned out on me.’ he said, looking directly into my eyes.

'Not fair!’ I shouted at him and put my hands over my mouth to stop myself from doing the same thing again.

But I am not to blame here! My algebra teacher is being totally unfair and I can’t even do anything about it. The only thing I can do about it is improve my goddamn grades!

'Don’t you dare raise your voice at me! Being a teacher, I am only doing what’s best for you so if you don’t appreciate it, you can kindly leave the classroom.’ He was now shooting daggers at me.

Being compelled to, I replied, ‘Forgive me sir. I will stay in the classroom and improve my grades.’

RINNGGGG!!!!!!!!

Phew! That was one hell of a period. I quickly put my books into my backpack and rush out of the classroom with Kira by my side.

‘Paris?’

'What?!’ This name calling thing is seriously taking a toll on me.

‘Oh! I’m sorry, is it a bad time?’ I turned towards the voice to see Tim from biology class with a worried expression on his face.

Poor guy! I scared him really bad.

I shook my head to tell him that it was fine.

Getting my approval, he started, ‘so, I was thinking, since we need to partner up for the biology project, maybe you and I could, you know, partner up.’

As much as I wanted to say yes to him, I couldn’t. I was already with Kira.

'I’m so sorry, Tim. I’ m already with Kira. But I hope we can work together some other time if not this time.’ I said apologetically.

He simply nodded and smiled at me. And then left the cafeteria.

I’m feeling so guilty right now and it’s all because I know that he has a crush on me. Since 8th grade. Which everybody knows. I really need to make up to him some day for always turning down his offers. Even the ones which involve doing really innocent things like homework.

‘Paris, that was harsh, you know.’

As always, Kira, the one person who cannot stop meddling with my life.

'But I can’t just lead him on, can I?’

'But you gotta at least give him a chance. Who knows? You guys may be perfect for each other.’

'Says the girl who cannot confess her feelings to my brother.’

'But that’s a completely different case! He’s your brother! And a certified genius!’

'Yeah yeah... It’s always a different case.’I said before getting up to throw the wastes.

I really can’t believe how long Kira has been hiding her feelings about my brother. Everytime she builds up the courage to confess her feelings to him, she backs out in the last moment. It’s really starting to bug me. She thinks it’s not written in the stars- her and Eddie. Stupid she is, because it will soon be written. I will see to it.

I came home early today because there’s no tennis coaching today. Eddie dropped me off and went I don’t know where. A place where intelligent people go to relax, maybe.

‘La la la la la..........’ I started to sing. It’s really fun apart from the fact that my parents actually wince when I do that.

THUD!

Wait. What was that? There’s one no else in the house. Only me.

Then where did that sound come from?

I jumped out of the bed and carefully opened my door to avoid attracting any attention.

I opened the door to my parents’ bedroom.

Nothing inside.

I looked into the kitchen.

Nothing there, either.

Then I heard a shuffling noise. Definitely coming from Eddie’s room.

Eddie’s not even home yet.

I took a knife from the kitchen and slowly started walking towards Eddie’s room. Turning the knob, I tightened my grip on the knife.

'Hiya!’ I shouted, pushing the door with my feet.

Wrong move. Because before me stood a boy my brother’s age with a horrified face.

'Oh! Please spare me.’ He spoke in a British accent.

The intruder is a Briton?

Who are you? - I nearly barked at him but then decided against it. No use asking a thief or whatever he was, who he is.

I walked out of the room and slammed the door shut behind me while dialling my brother’s number on my phone.

TRING TRING TRING

‘Yes Paris?’ My brother asked.

‘Eddie, there is a stranger in your room. Unless you know who he is, I’m calling the police.’

‘Does he have brown hair? And is he lean and tall?’

‘Why, yes! So you do know him.’

‘Stupid! That’s my friend I was telling you about yesterday. Please tell me you didn’t scare him off?’

Shit!

*face palm*

Why? Why?

Why did I forget that his friend is coming over?

I just made a complete fool of myself in front of, might I say, a very good-looking guy.

My brother never told me his friend would come while he was out.

But most importantly, he never told me he was British!

With what face I am gonna go back into that room, God only knows.

'I did worse, I locked him in your room.’
