Immortals (2): The Children of Typhon

In the year 1003 AD, a son of Typhon known as Olaf the Red had signed onto a ship in Greenland; that ship was captained by Thorwald Thorwaldson, an illegitimate half brother of Erik Thorwaldson, better known to history as Erik the Red. Thorwald and his half sister Helga (through his mother) were determined to sail across the world in Erik's wake so that Thorwald could claim his legacy - fame and fortune, at the expense of his hated half brother Erik, and nephew, Leif Erikson.

For his part, Olaf, a muscular red-bearded beserker sought only glory and new worlds to conquer; forerly Olaf had reaved around Scandanavia and western Europe, raided the coast of Briton, and by age 23 travelled east to the land of the Tartars and south again around Africa and the Indies, working for a Turkish sultan as part of his Verangian guard. But now he wished to seek adventure in the new world.

Olaf's priorities changed when he first saw the tall and fair, Helga, and when, after they landed Helga and her mousey companion, Isa were taken by native americans, he gained his chance to fulfil his yen for adventure and to impress the beautiful Helga. Rescuing both girls from being burned alive, Olaf pressed his suit to the willing Helga. Now he became Thorwald's brother in law and right hand man - in the next few years Helga bore him children, Torstein and Liv.

In the year 1007 AD, Thorwald's crew had sailed hundreds of leagues north intending to forcibly take over a colony his half brother had founded in Vinland. Olaf was at the forefront of the attack, with Thorwald and Helga (a capable shield maiden) behind. Isa had been forbidden from joining the fight, and entrusted to stay in camp with the children, women and old men, but the nineteen year old girl disobeyed and joined the battle.

Thorwald led 80 male and female fighters against 50 trained warriors, anticipating that the 200 or so souls in the colony would stay clear of the fight, and that some who grumbled about Erik would join them. His biggest regret was that Erik and Leif had already sailed away so he couldn't kill them.

At first the attack looked to be a success but a sudden storm a flanking maneauver that indicated a trap, turned the tide. Isa was slain by a sword thrust and Olaf swarmed by a dozen townsfolk. Once Helga realised that six warriors had slipped by, heading for their camp, she convinced Thorwald to break off the attack and retreat to defend the non combatants.

Thorwald had spotted a long haired cloaked figure in the sky as the storm got worse - convinced Thor was against him, he retreated. Olaf broke free of his attackers but then met a descending "Thor" who stabbed him and pulled out his heart as the warrior was awestruck and off guard. Moments later, Olaf gasped and ressurected, whole and hearty, proving he was a son of Typhon. The godlike figure was actually a time travelling future man of immense power called The Time Emperor - the Emperor took Olaf through time with him, as the first of a band of recruits.

Shortly after this a fisherman pulled the sword from Isa, who also ressurected. Confused she fell back to her camp, but was shunned by Thorwald, Helga and their people, who had seen her die. Called a wraith and ghoul, they attempted to drive the emotionally fraught girl away, eventually stoning her. Isa died again, but ressurected from her shallow grave.

After that, she made her way up and down the coast suffering more deaths and trauma, before finding a ship back to Norway, where she questioned her mother about the father she had never known. Her mother had had a one night stand with Typhon, whose name she pronounced Tyrphon. This revelation led Isa to believe she was the demi goddess daughter of the Norse wargod Tyr, and a grandaughter of Odin.

Following a few more years of poverty and hunger (once Isa died of starvation and was ressurected), Isa began to adapt survival skills, becoming a thief and eventually a shield maiden. Now known as Isa Tyrsdotter or Isa of the red hand, daughter of war, she made her living as a reaver and sell sword.
