Before he can start talking, however, the boy comes to the door, and I step aside as he leans down and peers through the keyhole, then makes sure it's locked tightly and places, as quietly as possible, a few boxes in front of it. I fold my arms across my chest and think about how the crazy guy opened the door that night. I don't think this precautionary measure will help if someone finds us here.
"I don't think anyone will bother us until the morning," he says after he's finished his job, as he shook the dust off his hands, "though I doubt this discussion will last that long. Come on, let's get down to business, sit down somewhere."
I look behind me and take a seat on one of the boxes. It's filled with something hard, and that's good, because otherwise I would have fallen in.
"So are you going to explain to me what the deal is and why you think I should believe you don't want to hurt me?"
"Your friends are also on the island. They're staying in the village now. If I had bad intentions, I'd deal with them first."
"My friends?"
"The blonde girl and the boy with two pigtails or they're not your friends?"
His voice sounds strange when he says "the blonde girl". I frown.
"If you've done anything to them..." I start.
"Hey, why does everyone think I'm the bad guy? I didn't do anything to your friends, that's what I'm telling you. Look."
He hands me a piece of paper, which I reluctantly open. I can't see what it says, and he, realizing this, pulls aside a quilt placed over a window. I hadn't even noticed it was there.
Now I can see the writing on the note. It's one I'd recognize out of a thousand, because it's Zoe's.

As soon as I finish reading the note I look carefully at the handwriting, looking for anything that might resemble a code that would give it away that she wrote it against her will, but I don't see anything like that. Eventually I'm forced to admit that the note is genuine, and, assuming he is this Childe she's talking about, my next question is:
