It was 2015. Evan Hansen had just started back at school. He was supposed to be writing daily letters. "Dear Evan Hansen..." That's how it was supposed to start. His therapist wanted him to write letters to himself and as to why he thought he was going to have a good day. But it wasn't going to plan, was it? Evan suffered from severe social anxiety and depression. The thought of him having to socialize with other people scared him — even people he knew, like Jared Kleinman, his 'family friend'. Evan was in the school library, writing the letter to himself. "Dear Evan Hansen..." He started off. "It turns out today wasn't an amazing day after all. This isn't going to be an amazing week or an amazing year, why would it be? I know, because there's Zoe, and all my hope is pinned on Zoe, who i don't even know, and doesn't know me." He sighed as he continued to write the letter. As soon as he finished the letter, he sent it off to be printed. He stood up and started walking to the line for the printer when Connor Murphy came up to him. "How'd you break your arm?" He asked, gesturing to Evans cast. Evan turned to look at him, "oh— I uhm.. fell out of a tree..." He said nervously. Connor looked at him and laughed, "you fell out of a tree?" Evan nodded, going red out of embarrassment "Yes.. I know, its pathetic." He sighed and started to walk towards the line again. "No one signed it." He was right — Evan's mom suggested he go around and have people sign the cast, but he was too scared to do that. "I know." He started to pull his sweater down to cover his cast. "Do you have a sharpie?" Connor asked him. Evan shook his head before Connor went over to the librarians desk and grabbed a sharpie. He grabbed ahold of Evans cast and signed it, 'CONNOR' in big, bold letters. "There. Now it will seem like we both have friends." They both walked towards the printer, Connor grabbed the letter and started to read it out loud. "dear Evan Hansen — thats you, right?" He continued "because there's Zoe? Is this about my sister?" He asked, getting angry. "W-what?? No.. Who's your sister??" Evan responded, getting nervous. "You knew I was in the library, so you wrote this, didn't you? And then you started talking to me, so I could see your letter about my sister, and get angry with you, didn't you?!" Connor yelled, gripping onto the paper tightly. "W-What?? You started talking to me.." He said softly, pulling on his fingers. This was making him really anxious, he didn't like confrontation. Connor stormed out of the library, with Evan following after him. "Please! I need it back... Please!" He sounded desperate. Connor turned around and shoved Evan to the ground before walking down the hallway away from him. "Please... Just dont show anyone!!" He called out, tearing up.
For the rest of the school day, Evan was terrified. Was Connor going to show people the letter? Was he going to post it online? He hated not knowing.. If he was going to do something to humiliate him, couldn't he of done it by now? When Evan finished school, he went home and made a small sandwich to eat, before he headed to the park. He loved being surrounded by nature, even though thats where he broke his arm. He wanted to be by himself in nature, to soak up the fresh smell of the trees and see the sunset in the forest. He had in his headphones as he walked along the trail. He spotted a person nearby and tried to ignore them before he noticed who it was. "Connor?" He called out, walking over to him. "Connor, what are you doing here?" Connor was leaned against a tree, an empty pill bottle in his hand. It was obvious he took whatever was in the bottle. "Connor?!" He knelt down next to him, to check his pulse...
