I woke up to a family voice speaking to me. It was cloudy and I couldn't quite make it out. It was a woman, I knew that much.
"Momma?" I said, when she reached out to brush some hair out of my face.
"Hey sweetie." Frankie spoke.
I opened my eyes to see the Hecks standing over me. My mother wasn't in the room.
I then became aware of the pain in my neck. Frankie informed me that I had a small concussion and had broken my leg. At least cheer was done for the season.
The Hecks were on my school emergency contanct, and when my mother failed to answer her phone they were the next to be called. I noticed Mike was wearing a Little Betty's delivery boy outfit, and immediately felt awful that he had to pick up night shifts as a cupcake delivery boy because of my mother's selfishness.
"Kenzie, they said you're free to go home tomorrow. That is if your mom comes to sign you out." Frankie told me gently.
"Well if you hear from my mom, let me know." I said, laughing slightly.
The Hecks exchanged a look and decided to leave me alone for a while.
A few hours went by and I'll just save you the suspense, my mom never showed up. Unsurprisingly, neither did Rick.
It seemed all my friends were letting me down.
My mother hadn't answered her phone, or come to see me yet and it seemed that she wasnt going to at all. This of course was concerning for the doctors, but I had grown used to my mother's neglect.
I had been in the hospital for three days, Acl came to visit everyday after basketball practice, mostly for homework help.
"Yeah so if you hear a rumor you're dead I have NO idea who started that." Axl finished telling me about all the funny things people were saying about my accident.
"Well if I never get out of here, they'll start to think I am for real." I said, somewhat joking.
"Well anyway we have that huge Aztec paper due next week, and my mom is being weird about me finishing it on my own so I should probably get home." Axl said, getting up to leave.
"Yeah, call if you need help with it."
"Will do Ken. And um by the way... uh. Nevermind." Axl started.
"No go ahead."
"Kenzie, you know I love you right? I'm telling you this because I'd want you to do the same. So here goes, Rick and Deb are seeing each other sometimes." Axl told me.
"What? No. They're just friends, nothing more." I said, angry that Axl would try to break me and Rick up.
"Kenize they're definitely more."
"No, they're not. I cant believe you would lie to me about this. Especially when I'm in the hospital for who knows how long! You had your chance and you blew it, get over me already!" I started to yell.
Axl's face fell.
"I know I had my chance and I know I blew it. I'm sorry for how I treated you and I regret it, I do. But now as your best friend I need to let you know that Rick isn't good for you, your mom is toxic and living alone isn't good for you, and you need to get out of there."
"I think you need to leave Ax." I said when he finished.
"Yeah. Me too."
Something told me Ack meant he was leaving more than just my hospital room that night.
