My father had been in the ground for two weeks. I had taken the past two weeks off of school to process everything. My mother was MIA, she didn't even show up to the funeral.

I was long past caring about my mother.

She was dead to me.

I was sitting in my car, trying to find the motivation to walk into school for the day. I didn't know how many people knew of the reason for my absence, and I really was not in the mood to deal with people's pity glances and meaningless word of comfort.

Finally, I willed myself to walk into the building. I felt almost naked without Sean's arm around my shoulders or Deb and Court's meaningless babble.

I wasn't sure where I stood with Sean. We talked a few times, and his mom made me dinner every night but, really, we hadn't been acting like a couple. In my experience with teenage boys,  this meant he'd found someone else by now.

"Kenz! You're alive." Darren greeted me at my locker.

"Hey Darren. I guess I am." I laughed.

"I missed you in Biology." He told me.

"Did anyone else miss me?" I casually threw out.

"You mean like Axl? Yes, a lot. He talked about you, like, every day."

Axl talked about me every day? I couldn't totally trust Darren to not exaggerate, but I knew he'd never lie. I shook the thought away, I was still technically dating Sean, and from what I could tell, Axl was dating that skank Morgan.

"Um, do you know where Sean might be?"

"Someone call for me?" Sean's voice called from behind me.

"Sean, hey!" I turned to face my boyfriend.

Sean reached over and took my books from my hands, then laced his fingers through my left one. This was a silent signal that everything was okay.

We were okay.

"Mackenzie! Thank God you came back today!" Deb ran to greet me.

"Yeah, tryouts are next week and that sophomore Morgan is totally trying to nob your spot in the pyramid." Court informed me.

"Don't tell anyone this but.... we don't like her." Deb whispered to me.

I laughed, "I won't tell, I don't like her very much, either."

Maybe everything would work out for me. I had a loving boyfriend, great friends, and my spot on the pyramid was for the most part secure.
