-for her.

she remembered her grandfather passing her a tin of coins that rattled with each shake of his hand.
she recalled the smile on his wrinkled face that no iron could smooth.
she could see her awkward self thanking him in her broken chinese that she had always wanted to improve but never did.

obviously, he died soon, four days after. as if coincidence could not resist participating, 'four' in chinese sounded like the chinese word for 'death'.

her grandmother was not the same afterwards as if anyone remains the same, it was just that a drastic change was not an apt descriptor. a small change didn't fit either.

it was simply in the air, the feeling that something had changed but nothing had but it did. complicated, but math offered solace. math left helen distracted and satisfied, sometimes too much, when helen remembered all those halcyon moments that took place in her prepubescent days.

the thing was, nobody really noticed helen before that. even ivan did not. ivan, who sat beside her every day, did not seem to notice the girl sitting beside him that forever wished for attention.

so, math wasn't an entirely shitty thing.

at least when she was called a nerd she was acknowledged. at least someone knew something about her.

well, ivan, should i apologise for my lie?
