helen bit her lip, before finally locking the classroom doors with the key that was assigned to her and she trotted to the canteen in steps unlike ivan's.

the closer she walked the more the chatter that resembled static electricity but verbal. painful, irritating and lonely in the sense that only she felt this way. she made her way to her usual spot that didn't hold the same comfort it did previously.

everywhere she bothered to look seemed to be occupied with her purgatory. of course, with purgatory, a sin must have been committed previously. what was her sin?

did it even matter? all she knew was that she wasn't exactly enjoying herself.

as usual, she unzipped her wallet that practically sagged with the constant amount of coins. slowly and surely, she made sure to count each one of them and calculate the estimated total weight, or mass, of them all. helen had made sure to calculate the weight of one 50-cent coin and one 20-cent coin beforehand, due to curiosity.

in the end, she had forgotten. time to do it again, i suppose.

"helen?" a voice spoke, momentarily shocking helen. she looked up, to see ivan.

"yeah?" she replied, composed as could be. what did he want?

without a word, he passed her a brown paper bag with a light pink sticker to seal the top to the side of the bag, cheap packaging to sum it up.

ivan beamed, in every literal sense of the word, and joyfully skipped away to a corner she could not see him in. helen blinked and felt it rude to open it so soon, it had been her familial custom to not open gifts immediately after receival. indeed, it seemed ridiculous, but she could always just ponder over what it could possibly be and lower her expectations in the meanwhile.

of course, the bell rang like it was the new class clown, probably using its ring to signify laughter, the teasing kind, directed towards helen.

oh well, that was life. helen shrugged and clutched the paper bag with force to signify life support and stood up, getting ready to queue up with the rest of her classmates who persisted with their annoying chatter.

ivan happened to be her buddy, of sorts, in the assigned queue they had. he smiled at her again, eyes not visible but a brilliant beam emanating from his smile was.

i guess that's why they call it a beam...

A/N::
well, at this point I don't know if I am self-inserting or writing a proper character. I like how it's going, really angsty so far. I'm going to write Ivan's point of view too.
