I slowly flutter my eyes open to quickly shut them again because of the light. "Morning" I say to myself, with very, very, little enthusiasm. I go to turn over to my side, but feel a presence against my back. Shoot, forgot about him. I look up to his eyes to see if he's awake. Aww he looks so peaceful. I smile. How could someone look so tough one second, but then look like a little baby the next. I chuckle to myself, but suddenly his eyes move under his sockets, then open.
"Morning." he says croakily. Damn you morning voice. I sigh, and lay back down, shifting a little farther away from him. I lay there for a bit, thinking. More in particular about why I even slept with him. I can't trust him, yet. In the world now, you can never really trust anyone. He looks at me, confused because of my adjustments. "This was weird." I admit, looking to him. "What?" He replies. "Sleeping in the same bed, I don't know..." I say. "Why? I don't think so." He says shifting himself to an upright position. "You... Well... Ok, first, you were drunk, didn't have a clue what you were doing, and..." "Well I don't regret a thing, and I'm sober now." he says with a stupid grin, interrupting me. I roll my eyes. "Second... I don't even know you!" I say, but not too harshly. He still has the dumb grin plastered on his face. "Well, the only thing j could say to that is..." Then he starts to lean closer to me.
"Yolo... right?" He whispers, and I can hear the grin in his voice. He then gets out of the bed, and walks into the bathroom, where I can no longer see him. I sigh. I stare at a wall for a few second, maybe minutes even. I don't what to do. I guess he's right, and I was scared last night. He was just helping me. I decide to just forget about it. I sit up on the bed, and swing my feet over the side. Walking over to the bag I have on the floor, I see Carl pass the bedroom door from the corner of my eye. I look through the bag and pull out a black tank-top and a red, blue, and white flannel. I only have two shirts, and one pair of pants. I progressively lost the rest I had, and the apocalypse isn't really the time to go to the mall. Oh, I miss those days. I close the bedroom door and change into my new outfit, putting the old shirt into the bag. "Y/N! You almost done?" Carl whines from the other side of the door. "Ya, one sec."
I put the bag on my back, and walk out. "Oooh! We're what my girl buddies would call 'twinning'" He says, pointing out the flannel he's wearing. I chuckle. "Girl buddies?" I question. "Ya! You know, friends that are girls?" "Ya, ya, I get it. And yes, we are twinning." I laugh. "So, are we going to your amazing safe zone now?" I ask. "Sure, my dad is probably worried about me. I signalled to my group that I'll be staying the night somewhere. If you saw a flare, that was me." he smiles. "I told him I'd fire another in the morning to let them know I'm safe." I nod and look around. "I guess lets get going then." I say, opening the door to outside. We walk down the driveway and Carl rummages through his bag, then finally pulls out a small gun. He stops, then points it to the sky. "Ready?" He asks. "Yup. Fire away."
He presses down the trigger, and a few seconds later the sky above is lit with red. I watch in awe. "Cool." I say, watching. Seconds later, we spot a second flare in the sky, not to far from where we stand. "Alright, thats them, let's go. I can't be late." Carl says. We turn around and walk down the small roads, until we get to a highway. "The flare came from over there." he says pointing to the right. "So I think it's a good idea to start walking that way." "Oh really?" I say sarcastically, laughing. He rolls his eyes, and we start our way down the long and wide highway. We pass a few rundown cars, searching them for supplies, but we don't find anything too useful. Only a little stuffed toy lion for Carl's baby sister. He told me about her while we walked, so when I saw it on one of the car seats I just had to get it. I felt a little bad taking it, thinking of its previous owner. A child. I try to forget about it.
As we get further down the highway, it gets more forested and less wide. Carl says we should be almost their. I'm glad because it's getting dark and I'd rather not run into dead people on the way.
"So, why did I find you... or you find me, alone?" I ask. It's probably a better idea to go out for supplies with with a partner, someone. "Well, I was just gonna scavenge a little shack we saw on the way, it was really close to the safe, so my dad trusted I wouldn't get into trouble, but I got lost. He's gonna be so pissed." he says, kicking a rock across the ground. He's been kicking for a while now, and it's honestly irritating me, but I decide not to tell him off. "At least he knows your safe." I say. "Ya, but I promised I wouldn't get lost, or do anything stupid... and I kinda broke that promise." He says, continuing his little game with the rock. "He's never gonna let me out by myself again." he laughs to himself. "I'm sure it'll be fine." I say with a smile, looking ahead. It the corner of my eye, I see him looks up at me, and I feel his stare on me. My cheeks turn a few degrees hotter, and feel slightly uncomfortable. I'm not really used to being looked at. I'm finally relieved when he looks back down to the ground. After a bit of silent walking, we get to where the road cuts off into four. To the left and straight ahead is nothing. No cars, buildings, just road and hills. But to the right, however, I can see a gate, and sturdy walls. Carl lets out a sigh of relief, as do I. "Thats Alexandria?" I ask. "Yup, that's Alexandria." He responds. I smile. the walls look very strong, and it looks like somewhere I could actually be safe for once. I smile, and we continue our walk. Within two minutes, we make it to the gate, to be greeted by a woman with short-ish, brown hair. "Carl! Your dads worried sick! What happened?! And... who's that?" She asks. "Just be cool. I'm sure they'll let you in" Carl whispers in my ear. When we get closer to the gate, the lady opens it slowly, looking at me unsure. "This it Y/N. Found her at a resort kinda place. I invited her here. She was alone." he says as we walk into the amazingly normal place. It had nice, warm looking houses, and I even see small children playing tag. I look uncomfortably at the woman as she studies me. Carl sighs. "This is Maggie." he says, sounding annoyed. "Sorry for the rude first greeting," he directs to Maggie, "they just need to get to know you." Maggie pulls him over to her and turns around, to try to cover her whispers. It doesn't exactly work. "Carl, we don't know this girl. I don't know what to do at the moment. You can't bring home every pretty girl you meet! We can't just be like 'Sure random girl, we'll let you right in!'" She whisper-yells at Carl. Pretty girl? Ok.
I frown, thinking that they won't let me in. Maggie continues to whisper things to Carl but gets interrupted. "Carl!?" A masculine voice says from behind. A man runs over to us and hugs the boy, totally ignoring me. "Dad, I'm fine." Carl says, hugging his father back. His dad lets go if his son, and turns to me. "Who are you?" He asks me rudely. I take a step back. Carl comes around to me, putting an arm over my shoulder. "A friend, and stop being mean. She's staying, whether you like it or not." he says looking from Maggie to his dad. "Plus, you have no say in this, Deanna's in charge now." he grins. Damn, if I talked like this to my parents if get a slap across the face. Its kinda hot when he does it though... "Fine... But find Deanna. Make sure it's ok for her to stay." The man says. "Oh, and loose the attitude. Stop trying to look "cool" in front of your new girlfriend." I can feel my face go red, and Carl takes his arm off my shoulder, but continues with the grin. "She's not my girlfriend..." Carl states. "...Yet."
