Chapter 18: Simon

Simon formed two thoughts almost simultaneously.

Why is this happening to me?! and I've gotta call my mom!

First, he decided a call to his mom was in order. Knowing her phone would be in her locker at the hospital, he phoned the Bjarstad Emergency front desk, who quickly found his mother once he explained who he was with such urgency in his voice.

"Qué?!?!" responded his mother, unbelieving.

"Yo lo sé, mamá. Pero hay que ser así," he responded. I know, mom. But it has to be like this.

They talked a little bit more about the details of the interview, Linda more and more shocked as he discussed the depth of the interview.

"Please don't say anything stupid, mi amor," she begged. "Please don't say anything stupid."

Simon had to laugh. "Man, no one expects very much of me!" he replied, jokingly.

With that, they said goodbye and hung up the phone.

Back to the palace.

Wilhelm gazed over at him. "Well, look at the bright side, I guess? After this, we are in the clear."

Simon looked down, grabbing Wilhelm's hand in the process. "I guess. Ugh, why?!?!"

Wilhelm looked at Simon, dejectedly. "I'm so sorry. Have I told you how sorry I am? I'm so sorry."

"Only a million times," answered Simon, moving closer towards Wilhelm. "But, seriously, do this again, and I'll kill you."

Wilhelm laughed softly. "Deal."

As the car approached Stockholm, Marie called and they listened to her final spiel on speakerphone together.

"Remember. Smile. Calm. Look loving but not too loving. Don't say anything stupid, but if you do, ask for a redo. Grovel. Smile."

"You already said 'smile,'" said Simon.

"That's because I mean it. And remember. You fucked up. Because you're young. Repeat that after me."

"I fucked up because I'm young," they repeated in unison.

"But don't say 'fuck'!" cried Marie.

"BYE, MARIE!" Wilhelm called as he pushed End on his cellphone.

Wilhelm and Simon laughed, and, taking in the last quiet moment for a while, cuddled for the last five minutes of the drive.
