Kyoutani and Yahaba. They went into high school dating. They argued much more than the average couple, but they were still young. Other than that, they were sure that they were soulmates. (If that was a thing.) They were also crazy about each other in every way possible. They often considered themselves lucky to feel that loved at such a young age. Even then, Kyoutani had a thick skull. When they were first years he would argue with his upperclassman. Yahaba could calm him down… sometimes. Other times? Huge arguments. They hated arguing, but it does tend to happen a lot. The team would have to separate them. But one day.

“Kyoutani Kentaro! If you walk out of this gym, we are over!” Yahaba yelled as Kyoutani’s hands grazed the handle of the gym door that leads back in the school, backpack swung over his shoulder. Yahaba was emotionally tired of Kyoutani’s disrespect to everyone at this point. Yahaba has never threatened to break up. Kyoutani has, but Yahaba would shut down the idea as soon as it left Kyoutani’s mouth. “I mean it…” that was quieter but echoed through the gym. It got a straight shot to Kyoutani’s ears.

“Tsk… see if I care,” Kyoutani said with a huff, leaving the gym and his boyf- ex-boyfriend. Yahaba stops there… watching the door close. No one dared to make a sound. Then Yahaba turned around and faced his captain. He bowed, hiding his face.

“M-may I leave?” he asked. His voice was stuffy and broken, but it was clear that he wasn’t going after Kyoutani. The captain nodded and Yahaba grabbed his backpack- still in his gym clothes- he ran home, scared to stop since Kyoutani and him take the same path. He would then cry even more.

Yahaba played volleyball once again the next year when the previous 2nd years were 3rd years. Yahaba hasn’t quite shaken thoughts of Kyoutani out of his head. Sometimes he imagines Kyoutani being a part of the volleyball team. How great his amazing spikes would be with Oikawa’s amazing sets, but sadly- no not sadly! Yahaba was happy that Kyoutani didn’t come back and that he never has to see his face. (other than the math class they share.) Ha- Yahaba hated math class. At the beginning of the year, the teacher gave cards with numbers that correspond with a desk. Kyoutani and Yahaba just so happen to sit right next to each other. It was the first day so~ ice breakers. Kyoutani refused to answer, so Yahaba just talked with the other two girls at the table. They talked about sports and they complimented how Yahaba wore his uniform with an Aoba Johsai tee that matched his shoes and bracelets. Yahaba was known for two things (other than volleyball). One: having charms on his shoes that always matched the undershirt of his uniform and having a bunch of bracelets styled on his left arm- his collection grew as people would gift them to him. With that said, Yahaba didn’t have any real friends other than Watari. Well, Watari and his girlfriend Hana. Yahaba is kind of a third wheel, but they never made him feel like that. Even when Yahaba sneaks in through Watari’s window, so they can watch Family Feud and he and Hana are watching Twilight already. Hana even offers to leave. Yahaba knows better and says something like ‘I’ll call next time, so I don’t interrupt.’ Then hops the fence to his right and proceeds to watch Family Feud with his cat, Creeper. That’s around when Yahaba learns that Hana is at Watari’s house wayyy more than he expected. But never the less, Hana- the point guard of the girl's basketball team and Watari’s girlfriend- is one of two of Yahaba’s best friends.

It was coming close to nationals when Oikawa, the captain of Aoba Johsai, decided the team needs one more strong player. And there he is. Kyoutani Kentaro, standing in the same doorway of the gym that ended it all. Yahaba saw him. He knew why he was here. Yahaba was practicing receives with the first years when he walked in. He narrowed his eyes and finished putting a few balls in the cart.

“Show some respect to our senpai’s,” he said. Kyoutani narrowed his eye’s too, just to be interrupted by Oikawa Tooru. They slowly eased their way into the last 20 minutes of practice. Yahaba was usually in charge of the 1st years. It was for next year… when Yahaba is captain… and Kyoutani is the ace.

Kyoutani ends up staying in volleyball in his third year, accepting the role of the ace of the Aoba Johsai volleyball team, proudly taking the role given by his Iwaizumi-senpai. They didn’t win nationals last year. They put up a fight this year, but not good enough- definitely because of Yahaba and Kyoutani. A setter and ace should have a beautiful relationship with trust and dependability. They didn’t. Yahaba felt bad. Not for himself, not for Kyoutani, but for Watari. He ruined it for him. He cried to Watari how he owes him a lifetime supply of boiled eggs. Watari just made jokes about how bad that would smell while Yahaba was on the ground begging for forgiveness. That was when Yahaba realized that Watari is his platonic soulmate, and he was in it for the long run.

Yahaba went to college. Other than volleyball he played the violin- and cello, viola, piano, ukulele, and a tiny bit of the bass, but mostly violin. He was trying to become a school orchestra teacher- a middle school orchestra teacher. He made it in at Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High. He was only 22. The varsity group was the hardest because they were already molded not-so-perfect by the previous teacher. The beginners were the easiest and were taking in the information like sponges. The middle group was good too, a little rebellious though.  Yahaba-sensei. Kitagawa Daiichi’s new and improved orchestra director.

Yahaba is in his second year of teaching. It’s much easier. He’s secretly happy that the old varsity group was now gone. The beginners from last year were amazing. Yahaba was kind of sad he couldn’t put them all in the varsity group, but he had to make room for the middle group to be in varsity. Yahaba needs the boy's gym later in the week, but the old coach left to coach a college football team. Yahaba has heard of the new guy but has never met him. Today is the day though. Yahaba needs the stage in the gym to practice, but he has to ask for permission first. He makes the far walk to the boy’s gym. He walks into the gym, shoes squeaking on the polished wood floor. One of his varsity (and beginner-but you’ll understand that later) students see him and fake jog next to him.

“Heya! Yahaba-sensei,”Jin Ryuu, a basses (and a violinist), says to Yahaba. Yahaba was pleasantly surprised.

“Hello, Ryu- chan,” Yahaba said. Yahaba is not good at the bass, but he gave what he could to Ryuu and Ryuu surpassed Yahaba’s expectations. Ryuu even taught Yahaba some of the basses, like when it’s the best to shift and how much earlier he should play his notes since he is lower and sound travels differently. Yahaba even jokes and calls Ryuu ‘Ryu- senpai’ when he’s teaching Yahaba something new. Thanks to Ryuu, Yahaba can teach his new basses better. Ryuu was in the varsity, but he was one of the lucky few that were in beginner last year.

“Move it, Jin!” The new gym teacher said. “You too, Creampuff!” He didn’t seem to notice that that was a teacher. Yahaba didn’t change from being 17, and these 15-year-olds look like they could have a wife and kids. Creampuff? That hurt. Yahaba didn’t run like Ryuu did. That’s when the coach noticed it was a teacher. That’s when Yahaba noticed who he was: the man he fell for at the exact school, the man that he had his first kiss with under those bleachers that were across the gym when they were 13, the man that he had his first make-out session in the locker room showers that were a 30 second walking distance from were they stood, the man that a year later would walk off on him. His first love. Kyoutani Kentaro. Also known as Coach/ Coach Kyoutani.
