It’s just another Monday- no it isn’t. Today, Kyoutani will be moving in after Yahaba and Kyoutani's after-school activities. Today, Yahaba is also practicing with the band. Uh, fun. Uno-sensei, the band director who has been here since Yahaba was in junior high, likes to be in charge of everything. He also focuses on the band because he believes they still require assistance. It's just two days before the concert. Yahaba is irritated. The rehearsals are much later today, so Kyoutani was let in. Kyoutani knew Uno-sensei when he was a baseball coach. Kyoutani would frequently show up at their club.
“Well, well, well. Mr. I-can't-pick-one-sport," Uno said, finally relinquishing control of the entire orchestra to Yahaba. Kyoutani extended his hand.
"Coach-Uno," Kyoutani introduced himself. Uno burst out laughing.
"I'm no longer a coach, Kentaro," Uno said. “What about yourself?”
"I coach the gym, football, and swimming," Kyoutani explained. Uno's pupils dilate.
"Wow, son," he exclaimed. He patted Kyoutani’s shoulder. “Well whatcha doing in the fine arts hall?”
“Just waiting for Yahaba,” Kyoutani said, pointing to Yahaba who is tuning fingerings.
“Oh yeah. Y’all were in the volleyball team together, weren’tcha?” Kyoutani gave a nod. “Well, I better go help Yahaba before he wastes too much time.” Kyoutani wanted to say something along the lines of, 'didn't his orchestra go to state, and your band didn't even go to district?' But he knows better.
"Good luck, sir," Kyoutani said as he sat on a bass stool behind Ryuu and Yuka. "How are things going?"
“Band sucks,” Yuka said. Ryuu gave a nod.
“Their tempo is so slow. They aren’t tuned,” Ryuu continued.
"Sensei attempted to run it, but Uno-Sensei refused because 'they can tune themselves.' Clearly not!" Yuka's words were surrounded by air quotes.
“Also, these songs go faster, but the band can’t do it as fast as us. And we are going the printed tempo,” Ryuu groaned.
“That sucks,” Kyoutani said, shifting in his chair. They all nodded at the same time. Kyoutani observed the band and orchestra attempting, but ultimately failing, to play in unison. Yahaba finally decided to step in 10 minutes before they leave. Yahaba clenched his fists.
“Listen! The concert is in two days, and I don't think you want to sound like that in front of your family, so I recommend practicing AT TEMPO tonight and coming to morning and afternoon practice. I'm sorry, but you're not going to put that reputation on MY orchestra. Am I clear?” Yahaba spoke up, leaving no room for a response. “Am I clear?” He repeats himself, but only a few people say yes'. Yahaba sighed. “Am I clear, Matsuno?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Am I clear, Noguchi?”
“Yeah.”
“Am I clear, Takayama?”
“Yes.”
“Am I clear, Anzai?”
“Yuh.” Yahaba did this to nearly every kid. Making sure they understood.
“Am I clear, Yuka?” Yahaba asked the last person.
“Crystal,” she said with a thumbs up. Yahaba smiled.
“Good. Now pack up and go home. You all have before and after school rehearsal, unless you are dying, or can prove that you know the music- like Ryuu, you can go swimming after school. So can you Jiro.”
