Today is Wednesday. It's concert day. Scary. Very, very frightening. Kyoutani and Yahaba are getting ready, with Yahaba dressed professionally since he is going to be standing in front of the dozens of people who were coming to see his students and Kyoutani in jeans. Kyoutani drove them to the bigger school, Aoba Johsai. They entered the large auditorium. Kids gradually began to arrive, and they began to tune their instruments. Uno-sensei and his wife arrived a few moments later. She took the seat next to Kyoutani. Kyoutani knew her because she used to bring snacks to the baseball club.
"Hello," the older lady said, nodding. She had black hair with grey streaks from aging. She sat with her legs crossed over each other. Her small hand bag sat on her lap.
“Afternoon,” Kyoutani said. “How are you?” Kyoutani was bored and she was there.
"Excellent, excellent. You appear strangely familiar. It's like déjà vu," the older lady chuckled.
"I would crash the baseball club like," Kyoutani counted his hands. “Elevennnn-ish years ago. Back when Uno was a coach." She clapped her hands together.
“Wow! I have the memory of an elephant," the older one exclaimed joyfully. “I’m not getting too old.” Kyoutani almost smiled-almost. "I don't recall you in particular, so no questions." She motioned with her finger shaking at Kyoutani.
"No, you said it was deja vu. You wouldn’t remember specifics,” Kyoutani said, speaking his mind. The lady nodded.
"How are the orchestra and band doing?" she asked.
“Well, Yahaba and coa- Uno-sensei are budding heads because the band is sorta slow and untuned. But then they practice over three hours everyday for the pass three days. I’m sure they will be fine,” Kyoutani said, leaning over so he can talk quieter. Mrs. Uno laughed.
"I feel like I'm a little high school girl gossiping with the popular boy," she explained. Kyoutani laughed at the childish remark. “You smile?” The lady expressed, surprised. Kyoutani gave a nod.
"Occasionally," Kyoutani shrugged. "When I hear something funny." The lady was overjoyed. They maintained a comfortable silence. The auditorium began to fill to capacity. Behind the curtain, you can hear movements.
"It's about to start," the lady said as she showed her watch. It was ten minutes ‘til.
“Kyoutani-kun!” Down the aisle, a woman yelled in hushed tones. It was Hana. She and Watari sat next to him.
"Hey, man," Watari said as he extended his hand to shake Kyoutani's.
"Hey, Watari," Kyoutani said.
“Call me Shinji,” Shinji said. “Hana is a Watari too. It can get confusing.” Kyoutani gave a nod.
The lights went out. When the drapes opened, the spotlights beamed on them. The band came in first. Uno-sensei was standing on a platform.
"Welcome to the Aoba Johsai auditorium, and thank you for being here..." blah, blah, blah. Uno-sensei was simply greeting everyone and discussing the songs. Then he turned to face his kids before counting down from 4 and the band began to play. It was stunning. Kyoutani began to realize what they were devoting all of their time to. They performed three separate songs. The curtains will then close for Orchestra, followed by a 10-minute intermission.
"He's here," Hana stated as she turned around and waved to someone. Kyoutani gazed in the direction they were staring. He was right there. Arai Eiji. He was leaning against the wall near the door. Shinji also waved. Are they friends? Eiji approached them.
"Hey, man," Eiji said as he shook Shinji's hand. “Hey beautiful.” He kissed Hana on the cheek. "Sup," Eiji said, nodding to Kyoutani, who nodded back.
"I didn't know you'd be here," Hana remarked, turning to face him.
"Yahaba has been talking about this since the beginning of school. I wouldn't miss it for the world," Eiji said, as if he were an angel. Hana nodded and turned around when the curtains reopened. Yahaba was standing on the podium.
“Hello. I am the director of the orchestra at Kitagawa Daiichi Middle School." There was some applause. "Haha- thank you very much." The first song will be a traditional piece. Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. The second will be ‘Rock show tunes.’ It's a rock song mashup of popular rock songs." It was clear that folks enjoyed the sound of that. "And now for the final song: Gentle Giant. It's in honor of our gentle giants." Some in the audience yelled 'go Ryuu,' which made Yahaba giggle. "Yeah, yes, yes. All right, let's get started."
Yahaba spun around. Before they began, he tapped his baton several times. It was silky and velvety. The children's bodies moved in sync with their instruments. Then it got really loud. Extremely loud and strong. Then it progressed from violins to cellos, then to second violins and violas. This is one of the shorter songs. It was a short and sweet classic piece. The piece came to a close with a harmonic, balance note. The audience then applauded as they all flipped through their selections. Yahaba had previously provided four beats... Led Zeppelin… Kashmir, to be precise. Everyone began to jam. Then there's Ozzy's Crazy Train. Then a Nirvana classic- Smells like Teen Spirit. The final song was Bohemian Rhapsody. Kyoutani couldn't help but notice the 4'11 tiny girl who was playing her violin like a rock star. The song concluded with the entire orchestra plucking 'Galileo, Galileo, Figaro.' Then it was over. It didn't take long for the audience to give them a round of applause. The rock-star-kid became shy and hid in her little violin. There was little time to rejoice. Yuka and Ryuu moved their basses, stools, and stands to the stage's front. Yahaba gave 4 beats, a little louder, so the basses can hear. The violins began slowly, followed by the deep, wonderful sound of the bass. Their fingers were moving at a million miles per second, despite the fact that it was low and slow. It was an excellent depiction of what basses are capable of. The melody came to a gentle, profound halt. The whole stage stood up and bowed. As the curtains closed behind them, Yahaba jumped off the podium with his microphone.
“I hope you enjoy Uno-sensei’s and my individual pieces. But, behind the scenes, Uno-sensei is assisting all of the kids—orchestra and band—in preparing for the first full orchestra in Kitagawa Daiichi." Kyoutani was unaware of this. “Uno-sensei and I have been working very hard on this, and hopefully we can do it years to come. I also forgot to thank and apologize to all the parents who had to drop off their children at 6:30." There were groans across the auditorium. The other half was laughter. "And the ones who had to pick them up at 6 p.m." Another collection of groans. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Okay? Okay.” Yahaba made an okay sign with his hand. Then a 'd' note rang out throughout the theater. “Well, let’s get started.”
Yahaba gave a bow. The curtains opened. The stage was packed. It's just... full. It looked intimidating. Yahaba took his place on the podium. He provided four beats. Then the beauty began. The flutes were a nice compliment to the violins. The oboes and basses were collaborating. The trumpets are accompanied by the violas. And the cellos with the horns. Everyone was on the move and flowing. There isn't a single note out of place. They'd take turns. The final note was lovely but powerful. The longest piece, which lasted 4 minutes, finished with a swipe of Yahaba's palm. When Yahaba's hands fell, the audience erupted in cheers. The entire cast rose to their feet to bow. The curtains were then drawn shut for the final time. The lights in the house were turned back on. Kyoutani and Mrs. Uno rose to their feet.
"I'm going to help Yahaba," Kyoutani explained. They all nodded. Mrs. Uno and Kyoutani went to see their lovers. Kyoutani found Yahaba conversing with a mother. Yahaba soon saw Kyoutani and said bye to the mom. He rushed up to Kyoutani and hugged him. Kyoutani patted him on the back. “That was so good, Yahaba,” Kyoutani said, patting Yahaba’s back.
"Thank you," Yahaba said. Yahaba let go while maintaining eye contact. “Thank you.” Kyoutani kissed Yahaba on the cheek.
"Come on, come on. Watari, Hana, and Eiji are waiting," Kyoutani remarked, trying not to sound angry in his last words.
“Eiji is here? Huh? I assumed he'd forget." Yahaba shrugged his shoulders. "Let's say hi." Yahaba and Kyoutani walked away hand in hand.
“Shig-chan!” Hana said, hugging her best friend- other than her husband. "You performed an incredible job." Watari approached and patted Yahaba on the back.
"You did a good job teaching them," Watari replied. Yahaba cracked a grin. Eiji leaned against a chair as he waited his turn. Kyoutani didn't seem bothered by him. Yahaba approached.
“Well, well, well. You know a thing or two about conducting," Eiji remarked. Then he sat his hand on Yahaba’s head, crouching down to make eye contact. “You did very well.” Then he murmured something into Yahaba's ear. “I think Kyoutani is good for you.” He patted his head and grinned. “I’m sorry.” Yahaba felt a flood of happiness go over him.
"Thank you," Yahaba said as he turned to face his partner and friends.
“Drinks?” Watari made an offer. Hana agreed and placed her hand on top of her husband's arm.
"I have to get home," Eiji stated. “My girlfriend is waiting for me.” Eiji went away. No, it’s not his girlfriend that Eiji cheated on. His girlfriend of two weeks is the one with whom he is finally in love. Real love. Yahaba approached his boyfriend.
“I’m down.”<3<3
