Thirteen

"This is..." I was at a loss for words.

We weren't even at the highest point of the Hollywood sign, and the view was already breathtaking.

"This isn't even it. Wait until we get to the top." Nate said, grinning.

We hiked a little more, talking and making jokes along the way.

"Here we are." Johnson said, grinning.

"Oh my god."

I took like ten hundred pictures and selfies with the boys.

Nate grabbed blankets from the back of the car, and spread them out on the ground.

"Wait, what?"

"You really think we would come all the way up here to just look and take some pictures?" Gilinsky asked, smirking.

I just gave him a Look, and sat in between Sam and Nate on one of the blankets. Sam put an arm around my waist and I put my head on his shoulder.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

It was my mom.

I hesitated, then hit answer.

"Hello?"

"Aria?"

She was crying. This couldn't be good.

"Mom, what's wrong?"

"Yo-your father."

I was immediately alarmed.

"What?"

I stood up and walked away from the boys, just a little.

"H-he was in a plane crash on his way back from a wo-work trip and they don't know if he'll make it th-through." She bursted into tears again, sobbing.

"What?" I my knees began to feel weak, and i fought the urge to cry.

"I-I already booked our flight. We leave tomorrow afternoon."

"O-okay." I replied, stumbling on my words as much as my mom was.

"I bought one for your friend Sam too. I don't know him well, but I can see how close you two are."

"Th-thanks mom. I'll head home soon."

As I hung up the phone, I dragged a hand through my hair, tears beginning to fall.

I looked into the distance, at the beautiful city beneath me.

How could I be somewhere so amazing and something so terrible happen?
