"Hey, I'm back." Kat slipped her bag off her shoulder and let it fall to the floor as she called from the front door.
"We're in the kitchen," Damian greeted back to her as a familiar face appeared at her feet.
"Oh hey you." Kat beamed as Sophie jumped up her leg and frantically wagged her tail in wait of attention.
"We?" She mouthed to Sophie as she picked her up and walked into the kitchen to discover Damian and her Mom sitting around the dining table drinking tea.
"Hey." Damian instantly got to his feet and offered Kat the now empty space he was in before setting about making her a drink.
"Hey." She blushed back, instantly remembering herself spread across the table where her mother unknowingly sat, beaming widely at her.
"You're back early." She turned to question her mother as she slid into Damian's seat.
"Your Dad wanted an early start back. There were some road works in Monmouth and he didn't want to be stuck in the traffic with everyone trying to get home from work, so we left early afternoon".
Kat cautiously smirked as she watched her mother titivate her now greying updo. It was a strange feeling for Kat to see her Mother displaying her relaxed state, which was normally reserved for the safety of her own home and only for the eyes of her husband and children. She was often perceived as quite uptight, prim and proper some would say and she was always on guard with David but here she was, elbows on the table, resting her head in her hands, conducting chit chat with the stranger in her daughter house.
Damian arrived back at the table and placed a mug of tea in front of Kat before taking the seat next to her. "So your Mum was asking if we could go round for dinner tomorrow,'
Kats's head twisted to look at him, her eyes widening in an internal plead for him to have said no.
'but I was just telling her that we were going to London for the weekend to see my Mum and Dad before I go to Devon."
"Oh right." Kat paused. "That's a shame." She smirked as she eyed Sophie trying to get back on Damian's lap. "Maybe next time." She rolled her eyes, silently thankful it wasn't happening.
Marie Smiled. "I think you have a friend for life there." She winked at Damian as he lifted Sophie up and tucked her under his arm. "She hasn't left him alone since we got back."
"How long have you been back?" Kat felt a slight panic that Damian had been stuck with her Mom for ages and listening to all sorts of stories about her.
"Not long, about 30 or 40 minutes." Her mother quickly responded.
"Not long at all." Kat side-eyed Damian who was smirking behind his cup. "So where's Dad?"
"Oh, he's gone down to the Boat. I said we'd meet him there for dinner seen as you and Damian can't join us tomorrow."
"Oh! OK!" Kat looked over to Damian, knitting her eyebrows in confusion.
"Right I'm going to pop to the loo, and then we should get going. Konor said he'd meet us there straight from work." Marie gracefully stood up and adjusted her cream jumper as she headed for the bathroom.
"So you're going to see your Mom and Dad tomorrow then?" Kat sipped the last of her tea.
"Yeah, well I was gonna go on Saturday but then I thought we could go straight after you finish work tomorrow."
"We?" Kat spluttered causing Damian to chuckle softly.
"Do you not want to meet my parents and spend the weekend away?" Damian let his hand rest on the back of her wooden chair.
