"Hey, wake up. We're here."
Kat felt the car roll to a steady stop before she opened her eyes.
"Looks like the whole gangs here." Damian chuckled to himself as he removed the key from the ignition and turned to look at Kat who was trying to discreetly wipe away the tiny trail of dribble from the corner of her mouth. "You ok?" He shifted onto his hip so he could face her properly and reached out to push back the strands of hair sticking to her cheek.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Sorry, I nodded off and left you to the journey."
"It's fine." he stroked her now hair free cheek causing her to lean into his touch and smile. "You had hardly any sleep last night thanks to me and then been to work all day. I'm well-rested lounging around at home all day."
Kat smiled to herself at him comfortably calling her house his home but chose not to publicly acknowledge it. "So... this is where you grew up?" she tilted forward to get a better look at the trail of terraced houses to their right. Each one was an identical twin to the other with their whitewashed walls, black iron fencing and three steps up to the jet black front door. The muffled calls in the distance drew her attention across the road to the large playing field being occupied by several groups of teenage boys playing football and a crowd of scantily dressed girls lay on the grass next to their game laughing carelessly in the early evening sun.
"Yep, this is home. Many a battle was won and lost on that field during my childhood years." He nodded over to where she was looking.
"Football battles or battles of the heart?" Kat turned back to catch him watching her closely with a half-grin fixed on his freshly licked lips.
"Ahhhh!" He sighed. "Both, I guess." He rubbed the back of his neck as his grin returned. "I had my first kiss over there on those swings." He directed Kats gaze towards a small play area filled with children and blushed slightly at the memory.
"Oh really?" Kat's eyes widened in playful excitement. "And who was the lucky girl?"
"Simone Baker." He blushed again. "I have to be honest it was fucking awful. She was a little bit older than me. Actually, she was in my brothers year at school, I'd fancied her all through primary school so when I got to secondary and we ended up hanging out whilst she waited for my brother to come back from his football match I was over the moon. I brought her an ice cream and we were chatting away when she asked me if I'd had a girlfriend yet. I hadn't but I couldn't tell her that after giving it Billy big bollocks about girls in my year, then she asked if I'd done stuff with any of the girls... I lied again, and then she kissed me. I didn't know what the fuck I was doing and ended up biting her lip in the process. It was a nightmare, I couldn't tell anyone what happened because I was so embarrassed and she didn't tell anyone because she would have been excluded from her group of friends for kissing a year 7 kid, let alone the humiliation of that kid being the almighty Scott Westwoods little brother."
"Wow!" Kat burst out laughing, 'I sorry.' she apologised through a hearty snort.
"It's not funny, it was really bad. There was blood everywhere, she looked like she'd been beaten up, had a fat lip for about a week, and I was then convinced for years after that I was going to become a vampire because a bit went in my mouth."
Kat couldn't stop the roar of laughter filling the car as she imagined little Damian checking his teeth for fangs the following morning. "Did you not tell anyone?" She panted through the giggles.
He shook his head. "Well I told my Mom in the end because it really stressed me out, I wasn't sleeping or eating properly and when I did drop off I'd wake up from the worst nightmares."
