CHAPTER TWO

I couldn’t be sure if my father had been right to tell me not to let anyone into the grounds. Suddenly at the gates there came a loud knock. I rushed to see who it could be. Could it be the one my father had warned about? I stared, not sure what to do. Her face was elegant and full of emerald beauty. Her eyes were like blue gems her lips plump and red.

“I am sorry, my father has warned me not to let anyone into this palace of mine.” I told her from the nearby window. I watched as she stared at me, her blue orbs feeling like they were infusing some kind of dangerous poison into my body.

“I think not, you will let me in. I have come a very long way and journeyed far. I wish not for you to be rude as well.” She told me. I sighed. Why would my father, with such great honored manners be rude enough to forbid me to let anyone, especially this woman in? This was not what a young prince should be known for. But alas, I knew I very well had to follow my father’s word even in his death.

“Forgive me, my lovely stranger, but I cannot let you come in. I must keep my word for my father, respecting his orders. Forgive me.” I replied. She growled angrily at that.

“Well, I should let myself in then, shall I?” She answered in an angry retort. I stepped back cautiously and only then did I realize that my father had been right in his words. The windows started to break, splitting into millions of pieces until there was no glass left, but in shards on the floor. The doors opened without warning or without her touch. This had to be magic. I stepped back, not knowing what would happen next, not knowing what to possibly do. I ran quickly and as quietly towards the only place that could make sense. Towards the West Wing.

I pushed open the heavy oak doors and pulled out anything from under the cloth and placed it before the door. I had to keep her out. I didn’t know who she was, but this was danger. It caused adrenaline to rattle my body and course through my veins and nothing but fear was making me act now. Footsteps could be heard down the hallway, and I knew I was in terrible trouble. Hoping my father wasn’t dead, hoping none of this was really happening, so that when I woke up she’d be gone and all of it was just a dream. That’s what I wanted right now.

A huge commotion blasted all furniture out of the way and the doors came barreling in all directions, leaving me in the middle of it all where I was fully exposed to her. Nothing to defend me. Maybe she’d killed my father somehow, someway, and wanted me next.

There she stood. Maybe a witch, or maybe I was seeing things, but blasting windows, doors and breaking everything in her path made me think that this could really be trouble. I pinched my skin, wincing; this was not a dream. Then how did my father know her, how did he know she’d come for me? How had any of this happened? She gave off a bright white aura and her beauty made me weak in the knees but fear was the only thing that was keeping me alive, so far. I stood now after backing up a couple paces behind me, sat the table with the rose. My father’s magical rose, I thought. Her eyes became wider as she spotted what I kept behind me. Trying to defend myself and the flower, not exactly knowing why. I felt like it had something precious that nothing else here had.

“I see you found your father’s…gift.” She said, smiling only after she said the word ‘gift’ like it was the opposite, like it was something to fear not something to cherish for its beauty.

“Don’t touch it.” I answered my voice wavering out of how frightened I was really feeling. I couldn’t let her kill it or me. Doing whatever it was that she was here for. I had to be brave. She laughed maniacally.

“Oh, he never did tell you did he.” She said, but it sounded more like a statement than a question. Her smile only grew, as I stepped back to brace myself for whatever she’d been planning ever since she’d seen the rose.
