I was hurting, and all I wanted was for it to end.

My skin felt like it was on fire, and my body was drenched in sweat. The laboratory reeked of blood, sweat and  some unidentified chemicals.

The piercing laughter of Dr. Hibble echoed in my ears as his footsteps pranced around the chair I was tied to." Enjoying ourselves ,aren't we?" He leered, gray eyes boring into my own.

"I have great news for you,Number 302! Guess who is going to be the lucky receiver of this new serum I made?" He held  up a tiny vial, the poisonous green shining through the crystal.

Picking up a syringe, and filling it with the green liquid,he neared my bound form ,his vile odour filing my nostrils with disgust and hatred.

'Here we go!"

And I let out a terrifying scream as he plunged the needle in my neck.My legs went still as I started to foam at the mouth, the putrid stench filling the windowless capsule I was put in.

"Hmm,this won't do,we need to give you more doses!" And the pain resumed.

I lost count of how many times the mad doctor emptied those chemicals in me .At some point he went out of the room,I do not recall when. My eyes fluttered tiredly as I struggled to breathe. My vision was fading..

Hiss..

Wait, what?

I stretched my head towards my side as much as I could. There,in a transparent glass cage lay an albino corn snake,it's beautiful scales glimmering as it stared lazily at me.

What? It hissed. Never seen a snake before, laddie?

How was I able to understand a snake?

"I-I-how can I -"

"You seem awfully slow for someone who has such a a bright face akin to mine." He flicked out his tongue mockingly.

Akin to m-?

I stood up with ease ,the chains around my wrists slipping smoothly to the ground.

What did I even look like?

I had to find out before Dr. Hibble came back to fill another set of experimental fluid in my body.

"Wait!" hissed the encaged snake. "Are you going to leave me here alone? I could use some company!"

I rushed to it, swiftly unclasping the lock on its cage  before rushing out to the lavatories.

I stared at my reflection .For the very first time.

My physique was lean and  flexible, pale skin covering up my face and body, littered with sun-kissed scales. Soft white hair lay matted messily on my head, while golden eyes full of fear and curiosity shone back innocently.

This was...me?

I looked down at my scaled hands.

Was I a snake?

An alerting scream outside shook me from my thoughts.

"There you are,you filthy reptile! How dare you put foot outside your assigned cell! "Dr. Hibble screeched.

I gulped harshly and shielded myself as he swung his heavy fist towards me ,except to feel..nothing.

I opened my eyes to see the snake I released earlier, biting at the scientist's neck with full ferocity .Blood spurted out of his body before he succumbed at my feet.

What? I just saved your life, and can't even get a thank you in return? He  muttered.

"I-I'm half snake!" I shrieked .

Congratulations genius.Now what's the plan?

What plan?

To get out of here.Don't tell me you fancy being treated like a lab rat boy. He shook his snake-head left and right.

"Ah, of course!" I picked up the snake and ran through the building that had housed me for several years.

Ah, its skin was so soft, scaly and smooth to touch!

Or had my senses just bettered?

Were all snakes this soft?

Admire me all you want, first get out of here! He hissed impatiently.

I kept running into scientists ,several of which I recognized used to come in my room and force-feed me various medicine which would hurt my stomach and make me vomit later.

My orange acquaintance kept getting rid of them one by one,but it was of no use.More and more people kept storming in with machinery to get rid of us.

We had to  get out of there.

No matter what.

So when I spilled the oil and dropped the lamp down, there was no going back.

I ran out of the building , water seeping down my eyes.

My characteristics  had enhanced,I could see hear, touch and sense better.

It was of no surprise to me when I found my rescuer sitting cooly on a tree branch.

I have decided I am going to accompany you. He snickered. After all,two are better than one, right?

"Correct." I sighed, the loose piece of cloth around my hips wavering slightly.

Now,now, you aren't Number 302 anymore.Fancy telling me your name, and I find it suitable enough, feel free to give me one as well. I personally prefer the name Goethe,if you don't mind.

"You are Goethe." I looked at him tenderly, then picked him and rested his cold body on my shoulders.

"I give myself the name Asras!"

Very well Asras, say shall we have a look in that town over there? Might as well get something to eat.

I nodded in approval and walked slowly towards a new, possible happy life.
