chapter 14: eavesdropping

"Hello, Jeon Jungkook-ssi, are you even listening to what I'm saying?"

Jungkook finally snapped back to attention. "Sorry, yeah, I am, yeah."

"Sorry, yeah, I am, yeah-" Taehyung imitated mockingly, as he leaned against the partition next to Jungkook's desk. "Says you as you completely drifted off from what I've been saying for the past 1 hour."

"No one can sit through you ranting about everything under the sun - let's be honest, hyung."

"What's bothering you?" Taehyung scoffed as he made a wild guess. "Don't tell me... Lee Jieun-ssi...?"

Jungkook made a face that totally gave him away.

"What? I'm right?"

Jungkook hesitated a little, before leaning in closer to Taehyung. "Let me ask you something, hyung."

Taehyung leaned in closer as well, his interest completely piqued. "What?"

"What do you think is their relationship?"

"What?" Taehyung furrowed his eyebrows. "Who?"

"Jieun sunbae-nim and..." Jungkook lowered his voice. "Min sajang-nim."

"Bro..." Taehyung backed away, losing interest at once. "You must be kidding me."

"What?" Jungkook frowned. "I'm serious."

"Then lemme ask you a question too."

"What?"

"Why do you care?" Taehyung snorted. "Their relationship has nothing to do with you."

Jungkook bit his lower lip. He was right.

Taehyung narrowed his eyes. "Unless..."

Jungkook raised his eyebrows. "Unless...?"

"Unless..." Taehyung gasped as he leaned in to whisper into Jungkook's ear. "Ya, Jungkook-ah, don't tell me you have feelings for her?"

Jungkook was so taken aback by Taehyung's suggestion that he just stared into black space for a while, processing that thought. Not admitting it, but not denying it either.

"No way?!" Taehyung was getting more and more excited by the minute, as he grabbed Jisoo's empty chair and wheeled it over to Jungkook's desk. "Ya, Jeon Jungkook, are you serious?"

Jungkook didn't know what exactly to say.

It was hard for him to say if he liked her or not. Sure, he was curious about her, always wondered what she was doing, would smile when she did, wanted to know her likes and dislikes... but that was pretty much it. And he was like that with Taehyung, too. So how was that any different? Surely, there was no difference.

Even that time when he was worried she'd leave the office without an umbrella, that's what any concerned colleague would do. Especially since she was his mentor. He just looked up to her and that was it.

That was completely it.

"Am I right? Am I right?" Taehyung hounded Jungkook, probing him to think. "Woah, this is a ground-breaking discovery, bro. I can't believe... 26 years... 26 whole years and finally today's the day... the day I get to see you in love with someone..."
