i sat back in the spring air, chewing on some bubble gum, in my wicker rocking chair on my grandma's porch. my grandma was a farmer, always had been and she always would. My cousin Alex was out on one of the riding trails with Eleanor and Louis, as well as my grandma's stallion, Chesnut, and my mare, Eleana. I'd stayed behind to take pictures in my mind, to remember everything after I left. My grandmother opened up the screen door of the old house.

"hey, gran." I said as my grandma walked up with her tray of fresh milk and cookies. She sat down next to me, picking up the socks she was making. We sat for awhile in a comfortable silence, the way we always had. Mid stitch, tears began to fall down her face.

"I'm going to miss this." she murmured. "I'll miss the company." my heart sank. She'd been mostly alone since my grandad died, and I had been visiting since then. Alex had moved in to keep her company and help with the cows and corn. But I'd always been her favorite.

And now I was leaving. Not just my house, but everybody in it.

"I'm not leaving forever, gran." I said.

"feels like it. Don't you love your old gran?" I bit my lip.

"of course I love you, gran."

"doesn't feel like it." she huffed. I sighed.

"gran... You have to realize that I was going to leave everything behind at some point. And even now, I'm not leaving you behind. And I do love you. I'm just going to see you a lot less often. I wish it was different, but this is in my job description. This is what I'm meant to do, I know it." she gave me a pained look.

"do you really know? You're only seventeen."

"and I've been older than my years for a long time." she nodded somewhat wearily.

"promise your old grandma something." she said, looking out at Eleanor and Lou, who were shrieking and laughing as they raced each other in Chesnut and Eleana. even though you could clearly tell that Louis had never ridden before.

"anything." She gestured to the couple.

"live like those two. Let the good things stay in your heart. Let the bad fly free. Sing like no one is listening. Dance like no one is watching. Love like you've never been broken. Live like heaven is on earth. Keep the chip off of you shoulder. Wake up on the right side of the bed. Laugh at everything at nothing.

"Kiss the person you love as if your never going to see them again. Follow your dreams, never give up. Mind your please and thank you s. Remember everything you've ever been taught. And never give up. And if you ever find yourself heading down the wrong path at the fork, you can come home and not be judged." she picked up her knitting again, cutting the string connecting her work to the yarn.

"alas, I'm finished." with that, she stood up and went back into the farmhouse. Immediatly, I pulled on my riding boots and hopped out of my wicker chair, heading for the barn. I headed past all of my horses, to the mare that I loved above all the others to ride.

"hey, Mara." I said, running my hands over her soft hair, planting a gentle kiss to her nose. I noted that she was already saddled up and ready to go. Alex. I smiled, leading the mare out of her stall. Quickly, i hopped up into the saddle.
